Sorry about that slight hiccup, folks. But I got the site back up. No data was lost and we got back up quickly. If you notice any bugs, let me know.

Hiya Ibrahim, how goes it?

I didn't notice a thing, but I'm interested in things like this - can you share with us what happened? If it's something embarrassing, like you spilled your "Jolt" cola on the server, feel free to be very vague. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My main question to you concerns one of my worst fears - that somehow all the 750,000+ posts here end up in the "bit bucket" via some horrific hard drive melt-down. Can you share with us any of the backup procedures that you use? When I worked at Aetna, we backed up everything on tapes that were stored at multiple locations just in case of fire, flood or some other type of disaster at any one location.

Thanks, John D.

Ya, and the admin password too.

Jeep, I love ya man, but sarcasm ain't my bag.

Clearly, I thought the questions were legitimate ones or I wouldn't have asked them. What good purpose did it serve to post what you posted? I didn't appreciate seeing that, and I have allowed it to irritate me. Could that have been put into a PM instead, if your intent had been, say, to truly help me to improve upon the types of questions that I choose to pose? Or perhaps a PM wouldn't have accomplished what appears to have been a significant part of your intended purpose, namely, to try to make me look bad in public? What gives?

PS It might be interesting to see whether or not my question gets answered in this thread. Perhaps I will PM Ibrahim to see if he can post a response to those questions, in order to give me some of the "validation" that my "lesser self" craves, to allay my concerns about a "catastrophic" loss of data, and possibly to help you learn something as well - and not just about databases.

PPS If you have indeed acted in a less-than-perfect fashion, I forgive you, as I would ask that you would do for me as well. Peace.

I don't, as a rule, discuss the exact details of problems or their resolutions. There are numerous reasons for that. But rest assured that we have quite a secure backup system, as well as one of the best hosting providers in the world, Rackspace. We couldn't have TBN in better hands.

'tis cool.
Unencumbered humor was my only intent /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Ibrahim, is the discussion part of tractorbynet.com (what we are using right now) custom code or based on commercially available software?
It looks custom. And it runs lickety split. Nice work!

Jeep: Grrr, I'm kicking myself now - I just learned a big lesson. Don't assume the worst!!! Jeez, all that for the simple, probably inadvertant lack of a stupid smilie!!! And I just ruined a perfectly good joke, that's even a WORSE crime!

I don't quite believe that "everything happens for a reason", but I DO believe that we can almost always learn from, and therefore benefit from, things that happen, even if they start out looking like a "bad" thing.

Maybe the "good" thing that can come out of this is that we all, starting with ME, remind ourselves to give the other guy the benefit of the doubt before we assume the worst and "come out shooting".

And hey, did anyone besides me notice that maybe I could have followed my own advice and PM'ed Jeep instead of doing the exact same thing to him that I was so worked up about in my own post??

Heavenly Father, my time on this planet grows shorter and shorter, and yet you continue to withhold from we the wisdom I so desperately seek! I shall take that as a sign that I must work harder to gain favor in your eyes! Sorry ALL! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Here, let's try that again:

There, MUCH better, if I do say so myself. Live and learn. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

And never mind Luke - how about, let go of your anger, JOHN. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

It's a little bit of both. We can't update off the main code base any more due to our modifications.

And as to the backups, let's put it this way. We've had total harddrive failure of TBN twice and the worst result was us losing about 8 hours of the day's posts (since we couldn't back up the changes, and we took a little longer than we should have determining the problem.)
