If the trucks out there are like here they always show up on a turn, never on a straight stretch. They rarely answer when you call, but at least know that you are there. Here it’s mostly CBs but in places they run MURS. A lot of guys were running Marine radios until the Coast Guard started cracking down.

Here active roads are classed as industrial and the frequencies are posted with call points. There are about 40 frequencies assigned by the government RR-xx for general use roads. Roads operated by specific companies use their reserved frequencies.

You can travel without a radio but the proper way is to wait for a vehicle with a radio and follow it. They will report your position.

I am in line to board a vehicle ferry as I type. Here they block the rear tires of the vehicles in the rear of the ferry and front tires of the vehicles in the front of the ferry. Plus there is a rope and netting that spans the front and rear openings of the vessel. Someone wa asleep on the job on that ferry.
