Last October I put down a couple of inches of millings on my driveway. Product was not the best, had a lot of "2in.+" material in it. I spread it with a 96" Landpride power rake and rolled it with a small vib roller. It has held up well but I have some areas that did not bond -probably because there were not a lot fines as well as the temperatures when I did it.

Anyone have an experience with topcoating an existing milling base? Just wondering what kind of bond I can expect between the old surface and the new material.

A friend had similar situation, millings were much larger than he expected and even for farm equipment was pretty coarse. He put enough limestone screenings on top of millings to fill in spaces between large aggregate. Then used what we call CA6 on top. CA6 is used for road beds, it's a mix of aggregates from fines up to 3/4". Probably could have just used the CA6 in my opinion, but he accomplished the goal of having everything bond together into a more solid, smoother surface.

Beez- I think my issue is do I run the power rake over the old surface or just dump the new material on top of the existing surface and then rake it. I'm worried that the new material will end up just "sliding" over the existing surface.

By the way, what you call CA-6 is typically referred to in New England as "process", "Graded base" or such proprietary names as "PerkPack" Starpack" etc- in essence stone dust mixed with 3/4" crushed
trap rock.

I wouldn't disturb what you have, it's already settled in. If you're in hurry, spread the limestone then use a vibrating compactor over it, that will push the fines down into the millings. Or you could just spread it on top and wait- after a few rains it will find it's way down into the base. limestone turns almost to concrete it gets so compacted from the rain.

I would scarify the millings, and add 4" to it. If you only add material on top of an existing compacted base it will scab, more so with thinner lifts. It your talking about spreading 8+" on top I might skip the ripping. I am not saying full depth rip, just say 2" deep with box blade rippers, add your new material, and compact again.

Thx- "Scab" is exactly the right word but I couldn't come up with it. I have areas where I hadgood material and it rolled in nicely, withjust the fines washing offthe top but other areas that aren't so good. Hate to disturb the good areas but sounds like that will be the only way toget a good job.

Oh and Paul Harvey...."Good Day"

Around here it called "56's". 75 miles south of me its called 3/4 fines.

Rip up the old. Lay down the new. Then use an angled back blade to make a windrow and roll that back and forth as you lay out the material. Then pack.:D

Note: gauge wheels really help.
