With those long tines and even though he is not wide i think those g4's will net you a score around 125. I have a buck that scored 110 and he is a good bit larger.

Edie, i would shoot that buck. I think i remember you saying you have not killed one there yet and have only seen smaller ones. You have to kill them eventually, and if you dont have 150+ acres and your neighbors dont practice the same rules about harvest as you its almost a waste of time to let a guality buck like that go. I let the small ones go to but i would not let him go. Here in SC our bucks have larger bodies but not those like in NY or canada. Around here that is a 2.5 yr old body, not sure about there but you can age a deer by the body but you need to be familiar with the body characteristics as well as your reginal size. My deer at my place will be about 115#s at 1.5 years on and can even be 8 points with short tines and 12 inch spreads. at 2.5 years they will weigh in at anywhere from 130-150#s and have abouta 13-14 " spread. Then at 3.5 yrs old they will be 165+lbs and spread can be anywhere. From then on the weight is really a wash but 4-5 yr olds will push or be over 200lbs. I have killed some 4-5 years olds that were not even 15"s inside. My cousin killed a 5 yr old 2 years ago that was 18"s inside. It varies?

Just courious he looks young from that body id say 2.5 yrs old if he is thatage you got good genetics!

The deer here are tiny. 100 pounds is a mature animal and a big buck might hit 150, but probably not. He's an older buck. I'm guessing 4 1/2 years old by comparing him to the other bucks and what I've seen watching them in this area. He might even be 5 1/2 years old. If he is, then he's peaked and not gonna get any better. Maybe heavier. While some bigger bucks and even a few book animals have been shot in the area, they are very rare. We have plenty of food for them, and the pressure isn't really all that bad. It's just poor genetics and VERY LOW deer numbers.

I need to see him in person before I decide. I'm leaning towards shooting him.

Thanks,
Eddie

Hey Eddie,

I would lean towards taking him too. As another poster said and I know you already know this , but it's almost pointless to accomplish much of a management program on that small of property, (if the neighbors aren't in on it for sure).

I too think your buck will be 120-130. On a lease in west Texas or S. Texas,, of course I know you'd pass on him.

Odds are good you may not see him again too, you already know this living here. A Texas buck will at times cover 5 sq. miles during the rut. So this guy might be from the Tyler city park..:D

With all the $$, sweat and work you've put into drawing deer to your place, you would at least have bragging rights to a $45 hamburger x's 50..

Good luck brother
