Words can't explain the sorrow being felt by the community or the family of Captain Joel Barnes. He gave his life to save his partner by shielding him from the intense heat of the fire that had trapped them. He has helped save many other lives in his career as a Paramedic and Fire Fighter for several departments before returning close to home to be near his family, serving on the Berwick Maine fire department for just over two years of his life.

Captain Barnes is a true hero to the many he saved and the countless lives he's touched in his short 32 years. Rest in Peace Joel, you are so deeply missed.

Last Alarm 3/1/2019.

I watched the ceremonies on local television. Quite a send off. I respect firemen, but many are killed on the job every day (I was in the mining business), and they get buried without all the fan fare.

It’s terrible when anyone dies but they do get full ceremonies. It’s far more rare and significant that Captain Barnes died in a fire while saving the life of their partner by covering him to protect him from the intense heat after they had already gone in and rescued others before becoming trapped.
