I need some help. I want to kill many vining plants from pasture and woods. The county agent hasn't been much help. They are blackberry, muscidine and some unknown waxy leaf vines that are too abundant. 2-4d hasn't been much help. I hate to use roundup and kill everything. It looks bad for a long time.

Any suggestions? TIA, MP

You don't want to just mow them? We have blackberries and they turn to brown dust after being mowed.

A girl I know uses Boer Goats to thin out her multiflora rose problem. She uses an electric fence to keep them in an area, and moves them every 3 or 4 days, or when the feeding looks sparse. She bought 4 female/kid pairs with no males for $175 per pair. Her website is www.thegoodhorse.com if you want to email her and aske her about it. I'm thinking about doing the same thing on my place for poison ivy eradication.

Hogs will to the same thing using the process you described but they will do one better, they will also leave the field dug up, fertilized and ready to disc prior to planting.
Did not know about the poison ivy.

Brush Be Gone works quicker and easier to direct than most Roundup sprayers. I use it on poison ivy.

What I'm doing to get rid of most vines that go up my trees is to cut them a couple places around the trunks of the trees during the winter and then spray them with Brush Be Gone or Roundup if they decide to come back from the ground. Lots of times, they'll be less vigorous in coming back from the ground because they can't get much sun down there.

Out in the open, mowing a couple times, spaced a few months apart kills most pest plants and weeds.

Another one that only kills broadleaf is Crossbow. Used on horse pasture out in our part of the country.

Highbeam, Here in TX, it seems to just spread them. Discing won't kill them either.

Mike, I've read where some goats will eat pioson ivy no problem, but i'm a weekender and it won't work for me.

Steve, I'll look for crossbow. Maybe better than 2-4d?

Just remember that most of these herbicides will also have detrimental effects on trees unless you are extremely careful to mix just exactly right and spray according to directions. I don't know if you have the waxy leafed greenbriar that has thorns, but herbicides won't touch it.

Goats would rather eat young greenbriars and poison oak than about anything else, but you said that wasn't an option. Wanna rent some? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Jim, Is wax leafed greenbriar, green stemmed with green thorns and green and white leaves kinda arrowhead shaped? I asked my extention agent what it was and he didn't know. I did a google search for it and couldn't find it by that name. It is a just plain tough plant. It can be killed with strait remedy on cut stems, but that's lots of work and time I don't have.

Greenbriar/Sawbriar can be killed with Roundup "grass" killer or MSMA. Mowing it just makes it short, I don't care how often mowed it will come back.
It is a grass type plant not a woody type.
It will take several applications to finnally rid yourself of this stuff.
