reducing sound from a motor?

I have a trash pump with a 5.5 hp gas motor like on a mower running my sprinkler system... man it moves some water.... anyhow running it for hours and hours the noise is aggravating to my neighbors (I don't really care) and me and more so my wife(now I am forced to care)

Seeing how when it is running I have plenty of water
Do you think if I run the exhaust into a bucket full of water it would make a big difference like it does on a boat?

I've been thinking about adding a generic automotive muffler to my portable generator. There's pages/videos on the web about this. I'm guessing it'd work for your situation too, assuming the primary cause of noise is the exhaust.

I second the add a car muffler. I have a buddy with a 4 wheeler that added one to the existing muffler and it is real quiet

The number one reason we do not go camping anymore, is because of retards running their gensets all day long. I can't imagine what that would be like if it was next door to us all the time.

I have heard that suggested before and have heard that it works well.
I would use a metal bucket and make sure that the water level is BELOW the level of the engine so as to prevent possible blooding if the engine runs out of gas.

simplest thing is to build a two sided enclosure to reflect the sound away from your neighbours.

I live off grid and have used various generators over the years.

On a particularly loud one (a couple of decades ago) I installed a longer exhaust pipe with an automotive glass pack about midway.

It helped a lot without restricting the flow.
