Guys,
Has anyone attempted to re-route the underneath forward discharge of exhaust to the rear of on their JD. I have a new JD 3005 and find the low forward discharge of exhaust up front comes back on the driver in a big way. Thinking of turning it towards rear and running it back under rear axle. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on this idea?
Thanks,

A friend of mine routed the exhaust on his Ford tractor to the rear using standard auto exhaust pipe and fittings. Have you thought about installing a vertical exhaust? Not sure if a kit is available from Deere or not. I installed the vertical exhaust on my 3520 and it resolved the problem your having. You can check Deere Parts online to see if a vertical kit is available.

Sincerely, Dirt

Have a JD mower with same problem so I was very limited as to what I could do, put a turn down tip on it adjusted the angle a couple of times and solved the problem. I know this is apples and oranges but might be a cheap way out.

Thanks for your responses. There is a verticle exhaust kit offered by JD at around $300 and you have to cut a hole in the hood. I'm trying to avoid doing this. Underneath is my preference. My concern is running an exhaust pipe too long and the engine having a problem exhausting itself. I assume your friend did not feel this was a problem. I am really not understanding JD's thinking on the way they are exhausting their newer tractors. This new way leaves the driver constantly breathing the fumes. Having a loader on the front seems to make it worse. Again, thanks for everyones response!

there was a recent post about rerouting the exhaust on the 790 - that may also be helpful..

I'll try and get a pic or two of his modified exhaust. It does have a unique sound, although I don't know what it sounded like before he changed to the rear exhaust. This guys an expert maintainence man with machinist and engine mechanical skills. I'm sure he thought it out throughly before he modified the exhaust. I'll ask him what if any changes it made or any potential problems.

Sincerely, Dirt

Thanks,

I added an extension to my 790. It moves the exhaust further forward and to the middle of the tractor. Have to be careful to keep away from the front tires. I would love the vertical exhaust but don't want to cut a hole or pay the $300. I think the under exhaust adds no value except lots of soot on the FEL.

rear exhaust makes for 3 point attachment "smelly".

It's not just JD's thinking, every manufacturer that sells a CUT diesel has it exit in that location, stupid if you ask me. I have the same problem as you do though, I can't stand to breathe the fumes. My cure right now is a respirator with a charcoal based filter. I have to wear one anyway when I cut grass, because of allergies, so I figure what's the difference in wearing it when I just use the tractor for something else as well. With it on I never get any of the exhaust while sittin on the seat. The only time I may get some is if I'm right up by the end of the pipe.

I have the vertical exhaust kit waiting for me at the dealership, I just need to find time to pick it up. It should get rid of the current problem, but we'll see. Cutting the hole in the hood isn't that big of a deal. The hood on the 3005's should be marked like the underside of the 3x & 4x20's.

If this doesn't fix it though, I guess we all "have" to go buy cabs:D.

Well guys, I decided not to do the rear exhaust thing. Visited a muffler shop and we added an 8 inch curved 45 degree extension that throws the exhaust out and up over the front left tire. Not sure yet if I accomplished anything.

This JD is a life long dream and I feel I did a lot of homework before my decision. I asked a lot of questions here in fact and got great advise. Who would have guessed the exhaust would ever been an issue. There is a lot to be said for " if it's not broke don't try to fix it". I tractor should have an old fashioned verticle exhaust in my opinion. Oh well...I can see a hole in my hood and a verticle exhaust in my future.

Thanks for everyones input,
Allen
