Hey y'all,
I need to dismantle the universal joint(?) on one of my pto shafts. How does one go about accomplishing this task?

I figured that removing the snap rings is one step, but after that, I'm stumped.

Thanks,
Mule

Before I had many tools, I used a c-clamp or vise. Put a socket just barely smaller than the bearing cap on one side. On the other side, put a socket slightly larger than the bearing cap. Squeeze until one cap is off. Catch ALL the rollers as the cap comes off. Sometimes you need a reverse squeeze for the other cap, sometimes not.

The YouTube video is good. The guy is kind of a klutz but overall it shows how to get the job accomplished. I've never changes this style U-joint. I've always had the type with the U-bolts holding the end caps. Generally speaking the ones with U-bolts are easier.

Hey, that looks easy enough.
Thanks, guys.

I'm swapping out the end piece on one end for a shaft to match my pto generator.

If you are reusing the u joint you have to make sure to retain all the rollers as bcp said.
