There is a farm sale this weekend, and there is a Pincor 20 KW PTO generator there that I may be interested in. I have a Ford 1900 tractor. Will it run OK off of my tractor? Here are the specs for my tractor I found from TractorData.com. Im just trying to make sense of it. Thanks

Ford 1900 Power:
Engine (gross): 30 hp [22.4 kW]
Engine: 28.7 hp [21.4 kW]
Drawbar (claimed): 22 hp [16.4 kW]
PTO (claimed): 26.88 hp [20.0 kW]
Drawbar (tested): 22.06 hp [16.5 kW]
PTO (tested): 26.88 hp [20.0 kW]

you will get about 13 useable KW out of your tractor and that genny, assuming your tractor is in average or better condition.

that means you won't be able to thermally overlaod your genny.

if you can get the genny at a good price and it works... no big deal to have more genny than tractor.

Sound Guy,

Why do you say only 13kW with it had been measured at 20? Just curious, where the over 30% loss comes from.

You are absolutely correct about no problem having more generator than tractor.

Thanks for the quick reply. Thats my next question. What is a "good" price to pay for this? It "looks" OK. It's dirty, but that is expected. It's a typical farm auction. The do have it hooked up to a tractor, so it will be fired up tomorrow.Auction link

I've also read about wanting to have 2 HP for every 1KV of genny power. So, to work the best, this genny should be mated with a 40HP PTO?

yes.. 40pto hp is what you would want, as a rule of thumb, for a 20kw genny, if you wanted to run at full rated output.

you want about 2 pto hp per kw generated

the 20kw number they quote is a direct lossless rating conversion...

look on manufacturers websites. just about everybody specs 2pto hp per generated kw

So, would it be OK to use it on my 1900? Would it "over work" my tractor? And what would be a good price to pay? Thanks

It would be fine you just wouldn't be able to develop the full 20kw.
I purchased a 25kw PTO generator for my 1720 which works fine. I can produce approx 12kw with my 23 PTO hp.
The bigger generator does have some advantages, 1st is you will not overload it electrically because you don't have enough HP and the engine speed will droop and eventually fall below PTO speed.
2nd the additional mass of the generator will help during surge loads such as when starting an electric motor.
What's a good price??
I would go to e-bay & search PTO generators to get a handle on prices.

won't overwork it. you will make as much electrical power as your pto hp allows within correct rpm range.

price new ones in your area.. then figure half that as a place to ad/subtract from, based on age and condition.

Your tractor and that generator will run your Television 24/7 with no troubles! ;-)

Think about it. The power requirements are up to you.

If you are drawing 30 amps at 240V that...ahh.... err...7.2kW if you are drawing 15 amps, that's half. if 15 amps at 120, half again.

It does not take much of a gen or a tractor to keep up with a bunch of light bulbs.

Put an amp clamp on your panel and see what is "typical" usage for you.

I would bet if you have a small place, and are considerate with what you just have to power, the gen and your tractor will provide all the electricity you could want as a back up source.

Now if you are powering a saw mill, or pumping water..... DO the MATH!
