This should go on a different site altogether, but I am tired of searching.

How much weight can you tow with a axle GMC6500 Dump truck? I know that you can buy GCW and put any weight plate that you want to on this truck, but can I tow 15 tons? 3116 Cat with a 5 speed plus low.

I am thinking of selling my Kubota 080 (With only 200 hours on it) and stepping to a Tak TB1140 to run this Timberaxe head, and need to be able to move it.

You should be able to get the tow ratings from a competent dealer. They'll need the axle info and door sticker stuff. It may be on the door sticker, but I'm not that familiar with the heavier trucks. Light trucks usually list the GVW and axle ratings on the sticker but not the combined (GCWR). That's where the axle info comes in. My truck (F250HD) has a chart in the owners manual but you still need the axle number, or know the gear ratios.

One thing that I did learn is that in NC, GCW means nothing. You can plate a Nissan pickup to #80,000 if you want to. I am able to weigh #36,000 with my F250 right now. Question is will this truck safely pull 15 tons? (The 6500 that is, not my f250s)

I would be willing to bet you are 1/2 right. A trooper seeing a nissan trying to pull a 40 ton sled down the highway would probably write a fist full of tickets!

Once you go over the 26,000 total weight for vehicle, trailer and load, you have to have a commercial license. There are allot of trucks out there in your size range that are rated for less then 26,000 pounds just to avoid the commercial ratings.

I think 30,000 pounds is going to be way too heavy to pull with a single axle truck. Add the weight of a trailer that's rated for over 30,000 pounds and you're getting really heavy!!!!

I don't know where the cuttoff is for towable trailers and their weight limits and where you have to go to a semi type setup, but I think you are well into that range. I know my 40,000 pound dozer has to be pulled on a lowboy.

You're going to have to get a dealer for that answer. Too many variables on that truck with axle ratio, engine, trans., tire size, bed, etc. You're looking at towing 40,000 lbs (machine + trailer). Sounds like a bit much for a truck with a GVWR around 37000.

Scott,

What is the GVWR of the truck. It's stamped on the door jamb sticker. I might be able to help once I know that.

My dump is 33,000 GVWR and I have a GCWR of 58K. I can pull a 15 ton trailer, but it's slow going.

I would say you can probably do it unless it's a loPro or has a low GVWR.

Are you sure your package is going to weigh 15 tons? My case 580+ trailer is only 12 tons.

try going to your local chevy or gmc medium truck dealer for help. At least ask if they have a trailering guide you could have.
