 Are the TD75 and the M7040 more or less equivalent? I got very similar quotes for each from two local dealers. This would be for 4WD ROPS with mechanical shuttle; they are asking about $25K, maybe a couple hundred more for Kubota. Is this too high?; there is not much local competition.

The TD is more displacement 238 vs 203, heavier by about 1400#, 12 speeds vs 8 and 1700# more stated lift capacity. Is the TD really more machine for the money or am I missing something?

They also had a TL90 4WD deluxe, cab, power shuttle, 24-speed dual power, but was around $50K, is this going price?

I need to pull 3X plow (possibly rollover), 10' tandem disc, 150 gal 3pt sprayer, etc.

I personally went through same comparison and ended up with TD75D. some of reasons were TD was heavier and had more low end torque( better for plowing) I liked both cabs the TD was also cheaper. One of the main tie breakers was the New holland dealer was super and straight up honest. seemed like all kubota dealer wanted to do was bash everybody elses tractor and gave me three different prices. dont get me wrong the 7040 was a nice tractor but for me and my uses the TD fit bill much better also New holland had better interest rates.

The TD is more of an economey tractor than the Kubota, a TN is more of an apples to apples comparison. Kubota does not have nearly as many utility models as New Holland does. I sell them both, in a tillage application I'd take a new holland... for a loader tractor I'd take a Kubota.

Not trying to hijack this thread. Hope you won't mind me asking Neil a question. Since you carry both blue and orange, I would like you to give some more explanation as to why you said buy orange in loader applications. I am looking at either a TC40 or L3940. Would those be considered equivalent? Why orange for loader applications? I will be using the loader a lot and not much tillage.

Nothing to do with the colour, the TD has a floor mount shuttle the 7040 has a clutchless hydraulic reverser with wet main clutch available.

Exactly, for loader work you would want to look at the New Holland TN to be an apples to apples comparison to the Kubota.

I don't think Neil was referring to Kubota and New Holland in general, but more specifically to utility models like the Kubota M's and NH TD and TN. His comments may not apply to compact TC and L models mentioned by TNhobbyfarmer.

Anyway, back to my original question, the M7040 I got the price on did not have clutchless hydraulic reverser, it was a basic ROPS tractor with mechanical synchro shuttle. They didn't have a power shuttle H model available on the lot. The power shuttle would have been an additional $1K+, not a bad thing to have but it wasn't on the 7040 that I was comparing to the TD75 at the other dealer. Options and pricewise the two were similar except for the differences I noted in the original post (heavier by about 1400#, 4" longer wheelbase, 12 speeds vs 8 and 1700# more stated lift capacity).

A TN or M-series can be made more deluxe with options, but the 7040 I looked at was pretty bare-bones and seemed to offer less for the same price than the TD, unless like I said I was missing some differences.

If we're talking bare bones open station, the TD is gonna be a lower cost machine. There are a few things that fall to personal preference. Some people don't like the spur gear final drive on the TD's. Some people don't like the front axle of the kubota. The kubota's mech shuttle is still a bit slicker to use than the TD's floor mount lever.

The weight comes into play too, are you working soft ground with high pto hp need? Are you plowing a lot too?

Do you happen to know why some people do not like the final drive on the TDD? To my knowledge it is a old design that is proven to work. The only reason I know people in North America don't like it is because it is different then what they are use to.

Spur drives were used in the 40's by most tractor manufacturers. They don't need as tight of gear manufacturing tolerances to work. International dozers I think are responsible for most of the hate, they are known to break lots of them. Planetarys came about and sort of fixed the spur gear problems. If they had been known for exploding they wouldn't be popular today. Skidders tend to break them but they are quite bullet proof in tractors.

My Kubota is small enough to have spurs in the back, I've not had a lick of trouble nor have I heard of anyone having trouble. Nowadays the front axle is the one I worry about.
