you shouldn't have to do that.

If the needles are engaged, there is a dogbone that should spring out to keep the plunger from rolling into the chamber. It should instantly snap the flywheel sheer bolt until you manually move the needles, clear the dogbone, and resume operation.

Hey Mattv1,
I'm not 100 percent sure why I broke the needles, just that when I restarted the tractor after replacing the shear bolt, I broke both needles almost immediately. Maybe when I lined up the shear pin holes something was out of position. I was rushing a bit as it was getting dark. I just dragged it off to the side, disconnected, and hooked up my back up baler to finish the field.
At the end of the day, the hay got baled. The NH 273 had been working fine after I had figured out it was out of time the first time and had checked it out from hitch to bale chute and baled my second cut with it. (I wrecked it on my third cut).

All I have to do now is find one more needle, and set it up again to carry on. I really don't want to trust it too much, especially when the hay is down, and rain could be on the way. Good thing I hadn't sold the trusty Massey Ferguson #9 yet (still have it too)
