On December 19, stopped at Home Depot for a carpet for some offices that I am redoing. Seemed like great service. After that went to Menard's to pick up a couple of items. Phone rings, it is Home Depot wanting me to sign some forms, told them I would be in the next day. Stop by the next day, the guy I was dealing with was busy, three or four other people ask if they can help me, tell them that "employee A" has some stuff for me to sign, they say OK and continue on their way. After thirty five minutes of waiting the employee is done with the customer that he was working with and has me sign some mickey mouse forms about mold etc. They do not even have the job yet. During the next couple of days I receive several calls regarding this or that with the order.
On December 21, stop at Lowe's for the same information. On December 27, the estimator shows up and does the estimate. Get a call a couple of days later with the estimate, the labor is $1200 more on a 1,380 square foot job than the original per square foot price. When inquiring why, they state that it was on cement, which I told them the first time, and that they needed to put some stuff on the cement to level it. Half of the additional price was for pulling up the old carpet which was in the original per foot price, but they dropped that by 20 cents to make up for it. Just told them OK, the wife and I went down and in less than two hours we had pulled up all of the old carpet. Does that mean we are each worth $150 per hour? Went in the next day for a face to face. Explained to them that I felt they were trying to rip me off. They knew the situation going in, yet charged me for the estimate fee and doubled the labor. Also told them that the floor did not need anything on it as my wife's brother has done many carpets in his buildings and has re-glued on the same floor at least five times. After the explanation of how quickly the carpet came up and a few other things, they agreed to the original price even though we had pulled the carpet for them.
The carpet is now ordered through Lowe's.
Lowe's has been open here for less than a year, Home Depot for about a year and a half. More than two weeks and still no call from Home Depot to come and measure for the final estimate.
