Interesting about the idle speeds, I've read the same in my manual, although mine is a gear, I've never paid much attention to my idle speed. I just drive like any other vehicle, such as a truck, when I mow or work the loader I usually dont let it get under 2000 rpms, just to keep the power up, but when just driving down the road in high range I probably run around 1500 to 2000, if going slow around the yard it may only run 1000 to 1500. I feel its easier on the clutch if you idle down when changing gears or directions, at least in my opinion.
My father-in-law is a retired desiel machanic and worked for catapillar and others, he said that engine is designed to run wide open all the time, daylight to dark. I just feel like I'm abusing my equipment running it like that. Who knows?? Just my 2 cents.

As far as idle speed, I'm thinking that maybe the radiator fan is not spinning fast enough to draw enough air across it. The cooling system does a better job of maintaining the right temp if kept at 1500. Most loader and grading work I'm running between 1800 and 2000. Most pasture work no-till drilling, spreading lime/fertilizer I'm between 1800 and 2300 depending if I'm going down or up a grade. I'm more or less trying to maintain an even speed and being fuel efficient. When bush hogging I keep it at the PTO mark which is supposed to be 2376. Never really ran her higher than that. After close to 4 years of use, all seems good here.
