I have been working on getting a new u48-5 for 8 months. one finally came in and I got it. I had the 040 for 2 years and put 220hr on it. Its a good machine. Complaints I had was hvac filtration and lack of a sealed cab, and the rocking back and forth. Cant crap on its size because I need to stay under the 26.1K, do not want to go cdl so I am limited on size. Kx057-5 would be great but it just puts me over. The u48 is about 1800lb plus heavier. The arm is a foot bigger but the tracks are massively bigger. It sits on the 057 undercarriage and that makes a huge difference in stability but also using the larger blade. The 040 has smaller skinnier tracks and would spin instead of dozing. This machine will doze better, a lot better. It will roll dirt. As far as the rocking, digging over blade of the 040 wide open you will rock because the machine will rock a little backwards as the counter weight is at the end of the back of the tracks and it is what it is. The u48’s longer tracks sit back past the machine and kills the rocking. The cab..the hvac uses a better filter and can pull from outside pressurizing the cab, that is also sealed. No more looking at the ground through the track joysticks. The -5 cab is great, much more room, better visibility, and a stronger air flow. The screen is a nice touch but i could live with out it, but I will install the rear camera. one thing that they did was give you actual storage trays too, better cup holder and a phone holder. The corners of the cab(the posts) seem farther away giving you more room around your head.
My camera case has a scratch over Lens so pics are funky. Oh yea, the cab is quieter too. Not sure if cab is insulated better or engine is just quieter.

Nice machine! I make a living with a U45. It scales at 12,000 ready for work. Like you, I chose it to stay under 26K. I pull with a dually F350 and a 14K Lamar GN. It is a pretty handy set up.

Those big tracks are going to pay off. You will be able to walk around on super soft ground. It will do a decent job of digging off the side of the tracks when needed.

The best thing I like about the U series is the zero tail swing. I am always up against something when digging. You do give up some lifting capacity with the zero tail swing but its worth it for what I do.

With the zero tail swing I can load up in the dump trailer then swing around and park the bucket at the back for balance.

Post up a few pic's when you get it in the dirt.

Coming from a a kx040 the u48 can lift a lot more. The extra weight and track size I guess are the reason, same hp.

Getting a CDL and pulling it and your skid steer together would save a lot of time and fuel. And saving fuel is important in today economy.

Not happening. Heck with .gov.
Same reason I wont get an sbr or can stamp.

besides I just dig sewers and water lines, no backfill. If I was an excavation contractor it would be a different story. That is a great setup to have on a jobsite.

I’ve ran without a CDL for years and finally got one. It wasn’t that bad. They’ve changed the law now though. And you can buy a medium duty truck for cheaper than a ton.

It just opens up a can a worms. Mainly the logs. Keeping track of fuel used cause our state taxes you ‘again’ on fuel used. Plus any of the cdl crap. The extra fuel tax is not much but record keeping sucks.

After I picked it up I scaled at 25180. I pull with a 14900 bumper pull deck over derated to 14500 cause my truck is 11500, it’s a 2022 f350 srw with 8’ bed.

Maybe I’m doing it wrong but I’ve never kept logs for my short haul dump truck and I don’t know of anyone else that does either.
