I have the 4520 with cab. I was wondering if anyone has had these issues. When I turn the steering wheel it squeeks, I believe the rubber boot on the steering column is causing this. It is hard to shift to different ranges. I have even taken the cable loose and tried shifting it direct at the transaxle and it is still hard to move. Are there any adjustments for this. My previous 4520 open station shifted much easier but it did not have the cables for the shifting levers. Other than that no issues except a possible door leak. Thanks for any info.

The steering wheel on my 4520 squeaked. You take the wheel off, undo the nut, remove it, the boot, and a little white plastic collar. I cleaned the shaft and parts, then use lubrication (the JD SuperLube stuff) on it all. Put it back together. You may need to do this more than once, and probably at least once a year.

Had a little door squeaking when it was new, put dry lubricant on the seal and wiped it off, all was good.

Shifting to different gear ranges is a pain, you kinda have to move a bit and just keep fussing with it. In general, all of the cable linkages on the cab are not as smooth as direct linkages. There is some play in the 3PH too. But you soon get the muscle memory and compensate for it and it's OK. A fine trade off given the win of a cab.

Going into 4-wheel drive is also a dance of pressure and some movement, not much different than other tractors but it does feel different due to the cable linkage.

Check your heater hoses where they go up into the cab frame, and where they cross the metal supports for the cab and loader frame. Mine were rubbing on the frame. I added some spiral wrap to protect them.

Thanks for the info Pete. I will give the lube a try. I will also address the hose issue, thanks for the heads up. As for the shifter I guess I will just have to get used to it. If I come up with a fix I will post it.

My 4520 has not been perfect, but it has not been bad.

The steering wheel on mine makes the noise also - they "fixed" it one - design issue.

The retainers on the door hinge pins are a joke - I have doubled them up on mine. JD really went cheap on that.

I had the ECM fail on mine. I was out spreading some dirt. Had been running it 6 hours. Come back put it in the barn to get lunch. Come back out - won't start. Bad ECM...

On the range shift - how many hours do you have on it? I have 175 hours or so and it has gotten better.

On the 4wd - don't force it. I just apply a little forward or back on the transmission pedals and it goes right in If you "man handle it" I am sure it will bend some linkage.

One thing I can not figure out yet is my left rear tire. The rotation arrow shows that the tire is on backwards. If I look from the rear - it looks fine compare to the right side. All the other 3 tires the arrow is correct. Came from the factory that way - I don't get it. R4 tires - comments?

One other thing to keep an eye on is the cab air filter. If you work in dusty environments - mowing, haying, etc. - the location stinks. Right in the rear middle - sucks up all the dirt. When we are raking hay with it - we pretty much go thru a filter a weekend.
