for jerome and others, some more information: the house is around 1250 square feet downstairs, and as I indicated above, we are adding around 500 feet of space upstairs.
It is on a crawl space. One half of the roof faces east, the other faces west. The roof is black. There is always a strong wind from the west. The insulation is batting, not sure about the r rating.
