While working on a lawn tractor motor this weekend I realized that my 3/8" SK torque wrench is the wrong tool for the job. It's been perfect for all the car stuff I've done over the past 30 years. I even bought a 3/4" drive torque wrench for doing FWD axle bearing nuts. But a Craftsman head bolt at 185 lbin barely deflects the beam on the lbft scale. I need a high quality 0 - 200 lbin Torque Wrench - will consider inexpensive options if they exist. What are you guys using?

I use an in lb torque wrench to fasten/check torque on some wooden horse carriage wheels. I bought a $40 set from ebay that has worked great for me. Has a caliper and slips when set is reached. Ive had no issues with them. Now if it was something i did daily, id splurge on a professional set. But i only use it maybe 4-6 times a year.

S & K, Stanley/Proto, Wright, Mac, all make decent quality tools. Personally for working on engines I would stay away from the harbor freight cheapies. They may be good tools but my experience with them has lead me to believe they probably are not.

Thanks, guys. I must admit to having a brain fahrt, though. My SK is a 1/2" drive, not a 3/8" drive. In looking around, the 3/8" drive wrenches seem to cover the range of torque that I need. e-Bay has some nice 1/4" for really fussy stuff, which may be in my future.

are you wanting an Inch pound scale or a foot pound scale,

200 inch pounds is only 16.6 foot pounds, that would be about 1/4 drive wrench.

Yes, I'd like to get something that will accurately measure, say 40 to 250 in-lb. Some of the eBay 3/8 wrenches seems to have this range covered. Prices really vary. Seems like Snap-on & Proto are the gold standard. I'm thinking maybe the Craftsman Microtork Torque Wrench fits my budget a little better.

I bought a 3/8" Craftsman Microtork a couple years ago. I like it pretty well, other than the fact the plastic locking collar on it cracked after several uses.

Measuring something that small will always be an issue, Limiting torque below 16 ft-lbs is just a way to sell tools. Use the appropriate size wrench to the limit of force that you can apply, that is why wrenches are differrent lengths.

You are nuts:confused2:

Several uses for a in-lb wrench. that cannot be done with regular wrench just because it is short:confused2:
