Wanna know the worst?

An engineer buddy of mine who works underground informed me that they are indeed imported to canada, however they are for underground or above ground mining (and similar) only.

Yep, cab and chassis, old school Land Cruisers are available here. Thats heartbreaking for us that would love one. Even worse than that is they can have the cabs cut down for clearance in the tunnels. Brand new ones! Theyre tough. And can hold their own in a mining environment. Theyre a full on commercial vehicle.

Ens Industrial, a division of a Saskatoon Toyota dealer is one such importer http://www.ensindustrial.ca/

Now, you are killing me !

Makes me want to stake a mining claim. Yeah - I'm sure it's because of "emission regulations", that we are being "protected" from these evil machines being on the road.

Well at least I have more options now: 1) Move to APAC, 2) Open a domestic mine.

Lol.

Apparently they do come out of the mine (sometimes) and come up for auction, but as you can imagine by that time they are pretty well used up. Some have the roofs cut off. Most have the sides beat in. But occasionally there is one that is salvageable and suitable for street use however they sell for big bucks. I was interested until I found out that the beat ones generally sell for $4000 or so, and there isnt anything left usable but the running gear

Im not sure if its soley for emissions regs that we dont get them. I think Toyota North America is "embarrassed" by these no-nonsense Landys.

Look at the current Landcruser. Its a glorified doctor-mobile, that while capable, spends most of its life cruising malls and keeping its drivers cocooned in leather, sat nav and 12 speaker sound. Its trading on the laurels that the old FJ's from the '70's set.

First off its a Honda and they look nothing alike.

Well thats a surprise to me. You guys can't buy the Tacoma (our Hi-lux) as a diesel or as a cab/chassis! I'm amazed. The Hi-lux has regularly been the biggest selling vehicle overall in Oz. I thought the full range was available world wide.

Heres what we can get in Oz. But we pay dearly for it...

Toyota HiLux range

While it has a solid drive train, and looks cute, you couldn't pay me to drive an FJ. I've driven one (yeah, owned by a medical professional) at my buddy's shop. I'm not that big a guy (6' 180#), but the cab is ridiculous. I happened to be wearing high rubber boots that day, moving that truck. I liked the fact that particular one was stick shift, but often the top of my boot would trip the hood release hatch - the cab is that cramped.

As the Brits would say, we are talking 'bout trucks built for "townies", not for people that actually work a truck.

You're talking about the current FJ right? A friends brother had one.. hated it. Was cramped with poor visibility and a pig on fuel. Personally I think the current FJ is a bit of a sad joke compared to the original FJ 40/60 or the current Aussie Landcruiser 70.

Of course what we get here as a actual Landcruiser is the super-fully-loaded Lexus LX570 that is close to $100,000! Fully loaded with everything. I want the anti-Lexus

True! I had a Mitsubishi L200 crew cab "warrior" model. 2.5L turbo Diesel engine.
It was ok but didn't excel as a work vehicle or private car as it was underpowered for motorway driving, handled terribly and had no where to put shopping etc! As a work vehicle, it would carry 1000kg in the load bed, if you could fit it in!
The lease was for 5 years and ended in May.
I always had a proper work van too, currently a Renault Master - 1560kg payload, 2.5L turbo diesel, quick vehicle, good capacity and a real work horse.

Do you guys in the US not have Ford transits or similar? They're a massively popular work van here, with pickups, flat beds & tippers being very sought after.

In the last few years we have gotten some of the euro vans. We have Sprinters (for close to 10 years now, they started the euro van trend). We have the small Transit, called Transit Connect. Larger Transit is supposed to be on the way. And Chrysler is supposed to be bringing in the Fiat Duplo(?) to sell. Some of them are being brought as Cab+Chassis, but ive never seen them done up like they are in europe, that is with a dump/work bed on back, any C+C we see here are made into Ambulances and RV's and such.

Yes, sa, those of us who are aware of what is commonly available elsewhere are not happy campers. In my case, the lack of diesel choices is the most irritating issue.

With the high % of pickups and SUVs used for personal (ie. non-work) transport here, the marketing focus is not on the C+C market - too much money is at stake in the (Shopping) Mall Marauder market. Blinged out trucks that never go off-road are big money makers.

Sorry to hear about your costs..... what I've seen of your market, even older trucks are pretty expensive. I suspect (like many countries outside of the USA) that high taxation is a big factor.

Yep, current FJ is the one I drove. Mall Marauder comments in last post....

I've heard the same comments about gasoline consumption in the current FJ
