Doing the initial transmission oil filter change on my previous HST L series tractors was always a messy task. I had to remove the old filter and install the new one as quickly as possible while oil poured out of the filter housing. I would always lose between 1 and 2 quarts in the process. I was prepared for the same "oil bath" when I did the 50 hour filter change on the MX5800. I was pleasantly surprised when no oil at all escaped from the housing after removing the old filter. Kubota must have made a design change at some point. Is this common on all M's and perhaps the newer L's?

I think there are two filters; one is the suction the other discharge. The suction filter (the one you change at 50 hours) doesn't pour out oil during a change, the discharge filter does.
It's been a while since my 50 hour filter change, but I think that's correct.

You may be right. There were two filters on the L's I previously owned but I forget the filter change replacement schedule. The "oil bath" resulted when replacing one of them per the manual recommendations. I believe it was called the "HST Filter" and was changed twice as often as the transmission oil.

There are two hydraulic filters on the MX. One is the "transmission oil filter" which I changed at 50 hours with no leaking oil. The second is simply called the "Hydraulic Oil Filter" and is changed at 400 hours. Since this coincides with the transmission oil change, there isn't an issue with leaking oil if the trans is drained first.

That's just the way I remember it on my MX-5100.
One of the problems I eventually had with the 5100 HST was the "leak down" in the hydraulic system. After the engine was shutoff for only a minute, and then started, the tractor wouldn't go until the engine had run about 30 seconds. Also, none of the hydraulics would work for about 30 seconds. Once it "pumped up" everything worked fine, but had an unusually loud whine when traveling.

I suspect it may be because I used hydraulic oil purchased at the local auto store, not the super UDT2. Don't know this, only suspect. I know in my new L-6060 I'll be sticking with the UDT2 when I add/change.

Good luck with your new tractor. I think the MX-5800 in a fine machine!

Thanks.

I envy your L6060. That's the machine I was after when I traded my L3430 but it was out of my price range. I needed more HP and the dealer was running a sale on their MX series overstock. The 5800 has all the power I need and is a great basic tractor but I hated giving up some of the creature comforts of the Grand L's. Maybe in a few years, who knows.

Really? I don't think my L4200 has 2? There's the one that's under the floorboard next to the hydraulic block, and that's all I know about... and oil does pour out of that one when you take it off.

I suppose I should have been more specific. Both my 3010 and 3430 tractors were HST's and had a separate HST filter in addition to the hydraulic oil filter. I didn't mean to imply this is true for all L series tractors.

Sorry for the confusion.

I know my L6060 is an HST and it's got two filters. One doesn't flood oil out when removed, the high pressure one does. The manual says to change the low pressure one out at 50 hours, the mechanic at the Kubota facility said I should change them both out at 50 hours just for "extra safety margin". Not sure I plan to do that as they are pretty expensive, although I buy both filters from Wix at a much cheaper price than Kubota.
