I noticed a lock bolt came out and the pin started to back itself out. Here's a picture of the other side, where there is an OEM bolt with a nut on the bottom.

Any way I can find out the bolt size without removing the one in place? I'm assuming it is standard metric.

So, you are missing the cross bolt and have not lost the pin it was holding in place??

thoughts...you could call your local dealer and ask the question. they may have the part in stock.

I suspect they would tell you that EXACT size is not too critical, just need to make sure you have a hardened replacement bolt fitting as closely as possible the available hole.

TSC has metric bolts, numerous sizes and lengths, sold by the pound, so expense is not great. Hardened bolts as well.

I do not think you would have a real problem removing the remaining cross bolt to get an exact size replacement...I've done that and it pretty much slides out when the nut is off...maybe need to use a punch and/or lubrication to ease it out.

I'm no expert and it has been a while since sleeping at a Holiday Inn.;)

I would either call the dealer and ask or remove the bolt from the other side and take it to a hardware store for a replacement. Any standard grade bolt will work as it is just there to keep the pin from sliding out. I would get a nylon locking nut for it.

I had a problem like that on my hoe bucket. I noticed it missing and put another in and next time I checked, it was gone again. I tried to take the pin out but couldn't. Apperantly someone drove it in and when the arm moved back and forth it would bind in the arm and twisted it off then it fell out. After I reamed the hole everything is ok for about two years now. Just saying.........

Ah, when I got my L3130, I noticed two missing pin bolts. Actually, only one- the other had a bent nail inserted. I found that 1/4" bolts, with nyloc nuts, worked perfectly. Since the loader was fabricated in the US, the bolts may a by USS anyway?

Like someone said, I'd be wondering why its out or broken. If it rattled loose, well fine but if its broken off it should be as there isn't any stress on it other than from the pin being twisted or something odd.

Common to break them if you get a little lazy on the grease cycles. Without grease, there is a good deal of force trying to twist the pin, which can shear the bolt and the rest will fall out.

Agreed, just go to TSC and grab a bolt.

The other one has a nut on the bottom but they look like common steel and quite corroded, while the rest of the tractor looks fine. It's two months old and garaged. I think the nut came off and the bolt vibrated out.

Guess I'll just have to take the other one out and take it to a hardware store.

A 6mmx45mm bolt works fine. What happened was that the pins were secured by these bolts, which had the nuts on the bottom and some excess shank. Somewhere along the line the bottom was broken off, presumably in contact with the ground, and then the bolt vibrated out. The remaining one was broken and loose.

I replaced them with the head on the bottom, then disrupted the threads so the nut can't come off easily as the local hardware store only had plain nuts.

Old bump...

Are these bolts supposed to be tight? The bolts on my LA525 loader are loose and I discovered one missing this evening. I noticed those bolts are loose on a Messicks loader demo.

Guess I'll need to look up the PN for the BY 10.9 so I can but a replacement... but somewhat upsetting because the tractor is new.

Probably does not matter, its just to keep pin located properly (and from coming out)... Probably being tight, one less rattle... Bolt is probably availabel at local hardware store for 1/4 cost of equipment dealers parts department, and probably same quality, if you are going to leave bolt loose, suggest nylock nut...

I live down the street from a TSC, I guess I can peek in there and see what they have. The nuts on my tractor look to be nylock, but I'll have to double check.

Considering tightening them just a little just so I don't lose anymore and maybe keeping them on hand just incase I lose another or something.

Thanks

The purpose of the bolts is not just to keep the pins in place but to prevent them from rotating. Within the joint are bushings designed to be greased and where rotation takes place.

The end of the pin where the bolt is located and its opposite end are not places designed for rotation. Only issue is to keep the nut on so the bolt stays in place. A wack with a hammer and punch will deform the threads so the nut never comes off.

That sized bolt is not going to deform the hole the pin is in so tightening it has not real purpose unless you hear it rattling. If you don't grease the joint and it gets very stiff, then the pin will rotate and shear the bolt securing it in place.

Yeah, I understand that part... and the pins are greased very well. Tractor has but a few hours on it and minimal loader work.

I'll get some extra bolts and I actually need a punch set, so this works out.

Thanks for all the help. I appreciate it.
