last night was an intersting one for late night critters.

i got home before the wife at around 11pm.. decided to take a walk around the neighborhood. about 20minutes in 2 raccoons were scuffling in a vacant lot.. making quite a bit of noise too!

got home wife got home. we walke dthe dogs and turned in for the evening. exactly 2 m later the dogs sleeping on the porch start making a ruckus. many tiems the horses come up to the fence and the dogs will bark. so i gave it a minute or 2... nada.. so i grab the led hi brite spotlight and step out onto the covered porch. after a few seconds i realize the dogs are barking at the barn cat that is now sleeping .. or at least 'on' the porch. 'barncat' rarely if ever comes into the yard and never onto the porch.. at most she sets atop the dividing fence, prefering to stay in the barn or the pasture. i thought that was odd.. so i shine around the pasture... here's what i saw.

at the back fence (south) were a pairs of eys they were obviously walking the exterior of the fence and looking in thru the 2x4 V no climb now and then.. half way up the pasture was a coon.. standing up to look around... north fence line was a fox , on my side of the fence.. moving quickly toward the west or front of the fence.... and then, about 120' out, a coyote juts out from behind the barn.. i shine him.. he looks at me then just back behind the barn.

yozers... lotsa critters.

glad the chicken and turkey pens are double wired..

found 2 snak skins yesterday as well.

lotsa wildlife!

my guess is the coyote is what made the cat come inside... he was in the area she normall stays.

Somehow I thought this thread was going to be about digging potaotes! ;-)

Yeah it's always fun to check out the local wildlife... when they're on their own side of the fence.

That coyote will get your kitty sooner or later.

My sister lost two of her five young peacocks last night. They were just getting big enough to fly up on the roost. There was no blood or feathers, so it must have been a snake. The white oak snakes are rough on young fowls.

My BIL keeps about 12 Gamecocks, some with a couple of hens in their own pen, 2 more with 6 or 7 hens each, others tethered to an open roost, [so they can cover the loose hens] and about twelve loose hens. The snakes are always the biggest threat to the biddies.

They raise Redbone coon hounds, so they don't have much problem with the furry varmints.

she normall sleeps in the barn.. many times sleeping up on a tractor seat. I guess htere was too many predators out last noight.. so she came up to the house to bother the (2) 100# black lab/mixes sleeping there..

Sometimes late at night, I will take the Golf Cart and roam the property. I love cruising by the Creek, because there is normally some critters around there. I realize that your cat is usually around cover, but Coyotes are notarious for getting cats. You are probably aware of this, but I only mean well.

We have from 6 to 8 orange cats. We also hear coyotes almost every night. Once in a while a cat will go missing, but I think it is from the old tom chasing off young toms, [we have a cat that lives with the dog in the back yard for this reason] not from the coyotes. I have found one of the young toms that was chased off run over on the road. [it was one of the few non-orange cats] But I bet most of them finds new homes.

Lots of varmints running around this time of year. I shot a young skunk a couple weeks ago. Got several raccoons and possums coming into the yard at night. My son and wife have seen several this past week. After I go to work in the morning my wife has seen them come in to drink out of the cat's water pan. She just set out a sandwich for bate before heading to town. Got the shotgun loaded by the door ready to go. Time to start thinning them out again.

I've posted this before. At the quonset we had two cameras out front with mic's. One night around midnight Les wakes me up and says something is going on out front. On the mic's we hear..."whoop, whoop, whoop". Well, I had never heard this so I grab the my 10/22 equipped with a Streamlight Stinger and go out there. It's pitch black out and from up the road I hear the "whoop whoop" coming closer so I light it up. What I see is a bobcat walking right down the road towards me, behind him in single file are 6-8 racoons all making the "whoop" sound. I was so fascinated I didn't even think about firing a shot. The Conga line went right past me, turned into a pasture and disappeared into the night. If I had not see it with my very own eyes I would never have believed it. Animals can do some pretty weird stuff........
