It's in the intake air tube and has 12 volt power to it. Any ideas?

not sure on that model it takes place of the glow plugs on the jd i had you turned the key to the left before starting

Air intake heater (grid heater) is my guess.

I suspect that it also has glow Plugs.

The heaters help reduce the chugging you get on a cold diesel motor.

Yes it has glow plugs also. Probably ought to install a similar heater grid in the intake on my old 1987 Kubota B9200. It starts cold okay but likes to see about twenty seconds of glow plugs first. Maybe could be wired into the glow plug circuit.

Edit: Anyone happen to know of an aftermarket version of the heater grid?

I don't know about aftermarket but Cummins uses it on their 4 & 6BT engines.

I see a lot of "grid heater delete spacers" on the web. Are they replacing the stock grid heaters with something else for engine preheat?

My guess is it is warm climate people, or they have a block heater. In the cold I want I the help I can get, especially if I am not near a power outlet....
