I could hear almost like gears just trying to mesh or what sounds like a marble bouncing around inside the rear of the tractor for lack of better description. I adjusted the clutch. All seems ok. When I engaged the pto lever it came back so I watched the pto shaft and noticed it slowed down almost as if it was going to stop but sped up again. Any ideas? Are these two stage clothes? Dealer said it痴 a single stage clutch

Do you have a service manual for that tractor?

I think it may have a overrun clutch built in and it might be giving up the ghost.

Yes he said it has a built in over running clutch. What do you mean giving up the ghost

I'm trying to say that it might be broken, but this is pure speculation.

You can so a simple test though. With the engine OFF, put the PTO in gear and try rotate it by hand. It should spin freely to one direction and not spin to the other direction.

You figure it’s giving out? He said it might be that it wasn’t used enough and that a few parts on these overrun clutches might be seizing. Any idea how they work? When I get back home I might put the snowblower on it and run it a while. He said try putting s load on it

That kinda makes sense. Basically a overrun clutch works like a rear sprocket on a bicycle. If you try to pedal it, it engages and translates the power to the wheel. If you stop pedaling it, it just free wheels.

The clutch has a bunch of spring loaded wedged that press against an hub in one direction of rotation. On the other direction of rotation, the hub collapses the wedges and just spins freely.

If not used much, I suppose the wedges could stick, but I believe those are under oil bath anyway.

Try run it with the snowblower to see what it does.

Ok. I will try it with the engine off to see. I will alsol load it up a little with the snowblower. If it seem ok I might let it run a while. Even if it is sticking though, the drop in pto rpm and then speed back up I don稚 get. Engine ran the same. I willl be home Saturday

Sitting here 500 miles from the tractor got me thinking? Could it be the lever linkages preventing the pto overrunning clutch from being fully engaged? Guess I?m grasping at a better solution than tearing into the tractor. Also, not quite getting how a load can loosen up the over running clutch. But I am eager to try it once home. I?d imagine, engaging and disengaging the pto with a load attached would work the assembly more so.

There is nothing externally attached to the overrun clutch.

The PTO lever will only slide a collar in/out of mesh with the other gears to engage/disengage the PTO.

I was trying hard to find a manual for that tractor, so I could see how the overrun clutch is setup.
