I took a standard magnifier lens from the local welding supply(LWS) and cut/filed it untill it fit under the clips at each end. Be careful not to take too much off. And make the edges of the ends tapered to a sharp edge to fit under the clips in the helmet.

Do you mean the clips on the inside of the helmet? (shown in pic) I assume that the magnifier needs to go on the inside so as to not affect the lens darkening.

Yup. Those angled pieces on the left and right of the window. They hold a thin protective cover. Remove that thin piece, and you can snap in a modified magnifier lens.
Use the thin piece as a guide to cutting your magnifier down to size.

I just took a look at one of my helmets (forgot to get a pic) and it had a wire clip that was flexable enough to hold the thickness of a magnifier lens. But before that I had cut/filed a magnifer to just fit under the short edges.
If you take too much off ,like I did once, you can just tape it on.

I just wear my trifocal ANSI safety glasses under the Chicago hood. Works fine for me. Those glasses even have a top layer of magnification equal to the bottom. Real handy when working overhead on any project. Plastic lenses may be iffy when cleaning slag.
