M8540 50 Hour Service -- Is Manual Capacities Correct?

I am getting ready to do my 50 hour service on my M8540. In the manual it states that the capacity of SUDT in the transmission is 64 quarts. For those that have done their own service, have you found the capacities in the owners manual to be fairly accurate?

I am wondering if I will actually get 64 quarts out of my transmission or if that is a 'bone dry' scenario that you will never see when changing the fluid.

I'm just trying to get an idea on how much SUDT I have to buy. 16 gallons sure seems like a lot!

I just changed in my m7040 3 five gallon pails you wonder where it all goes.

why SUDT rather than just UDT? it's just a gear tranny...are u way up north? savings could at least buy u an extra filter for the days ahead. good luck bb

I was thinking the same thing, but didn't want to re-open the old UDT vs SUDT debate.

Happily for me, in Canada we don't have the choice, we get only Premium UDT, which I think is UDT with a cold-weather additive package. Purely a guess on my part.

I guess which you use is entirely up to you, that's a lot of tractor to wonder if you put the right stuff in the transmission. I like to err on the side of caution, so my wallet would probably be kicking and screaming all the way to the SUDT display.

One thing about having 64 quarts of used trans/hydraulic fluid kicking around, you're not going to want for "rough oil" for a long time. I call clean waste oil "rough oil", keep some around for everyday use.

I don't know the reason, but I am pretty sure the manual on my 8540 specifies SUDT.

rjkobberman & triple r:
will leave the sudt & udt decision to you on your upcoming fluid changes....might call K central on that, certainly they should know.
one item i can highly recommend esp on the hyd. change w/that capacity....Northern Tool i believe is where i got a pump/5 gal lid arrangement that fits over a conventional 5 gal pail (get the udt in 5 gal pails !) ...has a long lead so the container can sit on the ground..MUCH easier than the hand job deals...then put the waste back into the empty containers. much less chance for contaminants too....
on the note of the large quantity of fluids on this model.....the extra oil capacity of my 8540 can't compare to the far greater work load this tractor can preform compared to it's lesser siblings in the B, L, & GL range. I've had L's before....... good luck

I have some time before my 50 hour service as I am now caught up on the farm where the M8540 is and am now using the L5030 where I live. I will do some checking as we used ARCO fluid in our CX80 because of the cost of the Case stuff. My father in law use to own the local distributorship and it is now run by a relative, so the price is more reasonable. I like Northern Tool and will check into the setup there. My sons will be doing the service itself while I "supervise".

Once you include the front diff and bevel gears, it is a 20 gallon purchase!
I know, I was including that! That would make the whole "gear oil vs. (S)UDT" in the front axle dilemma pretty easy for me.

You might get a little better price break if you buy it in the 5 gallon pails. Best price I've found locally is $110/pail. Plan on having a way to transfer it, since you're not realistically going to be holding 5 gals of fluid up over a funnel.

Near as I can tell/remember, I thought the general consensus was that your PUDT was the closest thing in properties and cost to our SUDT, and might even be the same thing (in formulation). Here, SUDT is the one considered the "cold-weather" fluid.

Yep. That'll cut a lot of firewood. ;)

I am re-thinking about putting SUDT in the front diff and bevel gears. I have been reading that 80-90 grade gear lube is good for that. The book even says it is OK. What is your take on that?

I have a big tree pile that I have been slowing burning down. This was from the contstruction of my new home. I also have a second tree pile where I have been taking down locust trees in my pasture. Many, many more trees to go (to take down). I will have plenty of use for my used oil!

Think I may research more about the UDT vs SUDT topic. Near as I can tell, SUDT is not synthetic... it is just a multi-grade (multi-viscosity?) fluid that flows better in cold weather. I live in the mid-west where we do get cold winters, however most of my use is in the non-winter months and my garage is heated. Will have to think about this one.

I put 80/90 gear lube in the front axle of my L3400 at 50 hours without even debating the issue. If it's good enough for 300 plus horsepower delivered through auto rear ends, it's good enough for the tractor.

X2. The front axle simply doesn't need anything as exotic and expensive as SUDT, I would only even consider it if I lived in a really cold climate.

Like Sean says, there are literally millions of gears out there turning in gear oil, a good many of them in Ag equipment, for years and years. And Kubota "sanctions" it. So it's an easy and safe way to save yourself some bucks.

Let me toss something out there. I just got a L5040 GST delivered yesterday and it says no change in the transmission oil till 400 hours! No change of the filter either on the GST. On the HST transmission it says to change the transmission oil FILTER only at 50 and again at 200 and the the actual transmission oil at 400 hours. Only change the front axle case fluid AFTER the frst 400 hours. So according to my new tractors manual I'm to forget about the transmission fluid and trans filters till I get a whopping 400 hours on it! But it says to change the engine oil/engine oil filter after 50 then at 200/400. It says this again on a little plastic sheet that only change the transmission filter on the HST at 50 hours. The GST can go till 400 hours before changing out the transmission filter and fluid. And to stir the pot even more it says that UDT and SUDT are fine in my new L5040 GST.:D
