I am sitting here waiting to go to the fireworks and thought I would see if anyone knows why my tractor will not start.

I got this tractor late last year or early this year and have over 300 hrs on it and for the most part love it. However my son was running it yesterday unloading round bales from the trailers. He says it ran perfect and was not short on power. He shut it off last night and this morning it will not start. It did rain about 8 tenths pretty hard last night and it was sitting out. It is almost like the fuel shut off is pulled out. It cranks over fine but will not fire or start. I am wondering if the selonoid or what ever it is called on the top of the injection pump is working. The fuse inside the cab is not blown. I pulled the wire off the selonoid and checked for voltage on the 2 wires. With the key on nothing. If I touch a ground on the tractor there is 12.3 volts. I set the tester on continutity thinking the other wire is ground. touched the frame and the wire and nothing. Not sure this means anything but that is what I did.

Any thoughts before I call dealer in the morning to have them come out.

I do have fuel in the tractor.

Thanks
Tom

Tom, normally you can hear the fuel shut off working with a turn of the key. It isn't getting fuel, as if they crank, they start!

I'm certainly not a Kubota tech, but from what you've described it sounds like a fuel depravation issue. It also could be moisture in the fuel filter. So, based on those guesses, I’d start with your fuel filter and water separator. See if you can drain your bowl on the bottom of your fuel filter or inline, or wherever the bowl is. That may clear any small sediment or water there. Then, you will need to bleed your fuel system, which also could be a starting issue.

I’m relatively cheap, so I generally start with the least expensive logical solution. In this case you may need to change a fuel filter; still not really expensive. I say this because I’ve had to change the first fuel filters on my tractors between about 200 to 500 hours, depending on several variables. You are right in the range of possibly needing to change your first fuel filter. This may not help you, but I believe it to be a reasonable place to start. Good luck!

Tom:

On my B2400 and L2900 the solenoid turns off the fuel when it is energized by 12 volts. If you read 12V with the key off, the solenoid relay may be stuck closed, which would activate the solenoid (and turn off the fuel) all the time. If that is so, it should crank if you leave the solenoid wire off.

The problem is solved. It ended up being a bad relay. Pretty simple solution.

The way I understand it is that there are 2 wires going to the selonoid. Both wires are hot and it gets its ground through the base. Since it takes more effort to move the selonoid one wire has voltage only when cranking which helps pull the selonoid up. The other wire has voltage all the time while cranking and while it is running to keep the selonoid up.

Thanks for all your help and ideas.

I also thought I would mention that my tires are losing big hunks of tread. (Tire people call it bar chipping I think) Anyway I called my tire dealer and they know about the problem and ordered me a new set of fronts out of the factory since the ones they had in stock would do the same thing. I believe they will probably put a new set of rears on also since they are doing the same thing but not quite as bad and the dealer is pushing to have them changed.

Kubota also sent me a new set of front rims that are redesigned since I use the loader so much and the riveted or spot welded area that you bolt the rim to the dish are cracking in the spot welded area and leaking air. Apparently they know of that problem also.

One thing I got to say. Kubota is not afraid to admit a problem and send a update to make things right. That is a sigh of relief from the usual "never heard of that before you are the first person to have that problem" that I hear from the other companies I have equipment from.
