I've got an older 742 with unknown hours and when operating will lose all forward and reverse movement within about an hour. A bit more information, I've purchase this machine at an auction and knew I'd be repairing a few things on it. When I got it gas leaked out of the carburetor and wiring was non existant (a switch and but to start it). After rebuilding the carburetor, new points coil etc I now have a good working motor. When I first start using the machine everything works well. After about 1/2 to 1 hour I start losing all forward and reverse movement. Bucket lift and curl still work ok. I've cleaned the pump area and do not see any leaks (well I've identified one very small leak) and all hoses look good. The pump and hydraulic block on the front of the pump do get hot to the touch but I'd expect that to a point. As I don't lose movement all at once I don't suspect a relief valve but..... I'm about to take it into the dealer (about 60 miles away) but thought I'd post here first to see if anybody had an idea.

Thanks.

Thanks I'll look into that. BTW; I've been out of town for the last week so nothing has gotten done around the homestead.

Sounds like the classic case of worn hydraulic pumps/motors. Rebuild time $$$$.

Most likely. I just took it into the dealer today. Should know something in a day or two. Your right it probably will cost some bucks but in the end I'll still end up with a good piece of equipment at a fraction of the cost of a new one. For what I paid (basically scrap price) It's been a good project and it's something I'll be using quite abit.

Picking up my SS from the dealer today. Looks like both motors are worn out. I have found replacements for $1200 (new) and will be ordering them tonight. Good news is the pump is in good shape. Replacing the motors are pretty easy so I'll tackle that myself. Dealer didn't want to go the rebuild route as they really haven't had very good success rebuilding. Maybe that's the tech or the process etc. Anyway after replacing motors will have a local hydraulic mechanic rebuild at his leasure and then I'll have spare parts on hand "should" I ever need to go through this again.

Should have updated this post awhile ago. I've got my motors (new) at pretty good price but because of another project that is finally coming to an end I haven't been able to work on it. I'll post again when I get the motors installed.
