This weekend I'm doing the 50 hour service on my neighbors one year old L3540HST before we put on his front blower.I'm very familar with Kubota servicing, but have a question. We're going to do a quick filter change on the HST and hydraulic systems, not changing the fluid.I have fluid on hand, but I'm wondering about any magnets on the filters that have to be saved for the new filters? Thanks in advance!

No magnets that I'm aware of. Be aware the hydraulic fluid will come out at a great rate when you pop that filter off unless you do the shop vacuum trick.

Look at your new filters, mine had magnets on them, L5030. We lose one quart of fluid on a change without using a vacuum or anything else.

I do believe the hydraulic filter has the magnet not the HST filter. If I'm not mistaken the base of the HST filter is aluminum while the hydraulic filter base is steel. If you look at the bottom of your new filter if it's suppose to have a magnet on the filter your new one will have came with the magnet already installed. I saved the magnet off of my old filter so I can take a picture of it if it'll help.

The magnet is a a ring that fits just inside the o-ring seal on the filter and uses magnetic force to hold it to the base of the filter. I have read where it could stick to the casing on the tractor when removing to old filter. If it does stick to the casing then you'll need to remove it otherwise it will prevent the filter from screwing on all the way causing it to leak.

The only time I had to worry about oil pouring out when changing the filter was when I changed the hydraulic filter. Almost no oil came out when doing the HST filter. As part of the 50 hour service I changed both filters. I would suggest removing the fill cap on the back of the tractor and either putting a plug or cork in it or sealing it with your hard as someone changes the filter. I have a rubber cork that I use. One of the two filters was screwed on at the factory very hard.

Thank you for the replies gentlemen.I hadn't thought about looking at the new filters-duh!The hst filter has no magnet but the hydraulic filter has the magnet as described.I'd surely not like to loose a bunch of fluid changng the filters.Perhaps the shop-vac idea is the way to go?As I recall, duct tape the hose to the fill port and leave the vacuum running while changing the filters?I guess I'm a little paranoid about sucking up fluid into my vacuum.

I plugged the vent in the filler cap and lost practically no oil other than what was in the filters.

I am "pretty sure" both my filters had magnets though some have found the ones that came on their tractors didn't, see post #6 on this thread.

Of course at my age, if I think long enough, I can "remember" just about anything whether it happened or not.

I agree. My 5030 had maggots in the filters(s) but I don't believe my L3710 did but that was 4 tractors ago......

The M's have maggots in all the filters except the fuel pre-filter, built right into the filter so when you change them, you get new maggots.

So do the maggots eat the dirt?:laughing::D

My oem filters have always come with mags on them.

I saved the old hydraulic filter magnet to see if it could be put in between the hst filter and casing without compromising the seal.
