John Deere alternator, are they this expensive?

Worthington has a good supply of parts too - theyre online but worth a look. A new water pump for my Deere wouldve been $650 (at the Deere dealer ship - $250 at Worthington) but I hired a man I knew to rebuild it. The kit was $50 and the labor was $50. You should shop around do some home work and weigh your options.

The alternator light has just started to stay "on" on my JD 2030. When you increase the rpms, the light dims, but stays on. I am hoping it just needs the brushes replaced. I bought a set & new bearings for $25.

I have not had a chance to install them yet. If that does not fix it, I'll get the DB alternator for $88

Don’t forget the two paper clips, straightened to insert in the little holes to hold the brushes back while you insert the armature into the housing.

I have bought alternators for everything I own from DB Electrical. All have fit and functioned as new for a fraction of OEM cost. Try this lisiting for a 870.

I had a similar problem. My battery light on my JD4100 would go off above 1600 rpm, and would be on below that. Local JD dealer service said alternator was bad- new one over $300. I bought alternator on internet for $65, figured when alternator died I would put it on.
One day the tractor quit running and I had a fire behind the instrument shroud (very exciting). Once I realized it was an electrical fire I disconnected the battery and was able to put the fire out. Turns out voltage regulator shorted out. Regulator was problem all along. Had regulator replaced and tractor works great-there was no problem with the alternator. I was lucky the wiring harness was OK.

No need for paper clips. You can take the brushes out as an assembly and install them from the rear of the alternator. Two screws hold the assembly in.

I tried a different alternator from another JD tractor (same model alternator) and light stays off, but there could be a problem later with the regulator, you never know if it got damaged by the bad alternator.
