( How can he "refuse" to sell you the subframe? )

He repeated, "Your backhoe won't fit the JD subframe..." then
walked away. I followed him, then I asked again, "how much for the subframe?" He answered that I'll need two subframe...one for the tractor and the other for the backhoe to attach on the tractor and probably will cost a lot...over $900-$1000". I guess he dissuaded me rather than refused to sell but bottom line, I won't buy from him.

Then I went to the parts counter, asked the cost for a subframe. Parts man looks in the computer then says that I'd have to buy the subframe from the salesman...he can't sell it at the parts counter /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif.

I went home then called another JD dealer up north who quoted $305 for the subframe.

With the high cost of steel, it'll be cheaper for me to buy one then modify it rather than buying raw material and fabricating one.

Not only that, but if you get one that fits the tractor, all those connections are done for you. That was the hardest part making my own subframe. The connections to your backhoe are duck soup compared to getting the ones to the tractor correct. You'll be WAY ahead to do a modification rather than building from scratch considring that price and the convenience of fit to the tractor.

As far as that salesman, you should tell him you saved his life the other day... tell him you killed a $h!t-eating dog.

/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Too funny.

I hope the other dealer has a subframe in stock, otherwise it'll be another couple of weeks for delivery. Not a problem though, I'm retired and the digging can wait.

Don't worry too much about the cost of steel. If you buy
from a new supplier (vs surplus or drops), you are still
looking at less than $1/lb. The labor is what costs (or takes
a lot of time). Still, a subframe for $300 is not bad, even tho
you must modify it.
