John Deere 2020 Pops out of Reverse

Can anyone tell me if there is a part that can bend or wear out and not put the tractor all the way into reverse and can I get to that part without splitting the tractor?
Sometimes it stays in reverse for a good while, but sometimes it pops out as soon as I let out the clutch. I think it feels like its not going all the way in.

My guess is this tractor has a broken shift rail detent spring(key 3). R&R of a spring would require splitting tractor & removing shift rail. It's possible tab that shift lever fits into on shift rail is cracked. One could remove shift cover & levers for a visual inspection

That, key 13, is the high range shift rail. It is the one I have seen broken in several tractors. I doubt it would affect reverse. Last time I split my 2030, I found it broken.
Key 12 is the shift rail for reverse.

I would guess the spring, key 3, TxJim mentioned is the more likely suspect. It could be broken or just "gummed" up.

Another possibility is the shift fork, key 10, is worn, bent, or the set screw, key 6, is loose, or sheared, and fork is moving on the shift rail (just a little, enough to not fully engage reverse)

No worries, You have probably forgot more than I know. I think detent spring you mentioned is most likely cause.

It appears to me that I post more incorrect info as I age. The shift rail you corrected me on I viewed the 2020 shifter decal to be sure which direction shifter handle needed to lean for reverse & then stated wrong shifter rail!!! Darned Oldtimers is galloping up on me

Off topic, but ...here goes!
You are not alone!
Few days ago garage door opener would not close.
Looked everything over closely....no conclusion!

Called young neighbor over for advice.
He reached down, and removed stuff that had fallen in front of one electric safety eye.
I had just previously inspected BOTH electric safety eyes.
WTF ???

EMBARRASSED....old phart !!!

We are all headed in that direction..............forget more, or make mistakes we shouldn't, as we get older.
We have two outdoor cats. I think they like making the garage door reverse.
I have seen guys mount the "eyes" on the ceiling to defeat their purpose.

My 2030 has the broken rail tab. So it also does not have spring (no place to hook the forward end).
It also has the the "park lock", so the range lever has spring inside to let the lever "bend". Sometimes shifting out of reverse, the lever wants to bend rather than move. GRRR

Am I understanding correctly that all of these possible fixes require splitting the tractor? A local mechanic told me I just had to remove the rockshaft cover. Would that give me any access to these problems?
