I've bought a used 655 the darn thing is extremely cold blooded. Does anyone else have problems like this? South Dakota is sometimes a bit cold but it sometimes takes 20 min. to get the thing going. Any thoughts?

I am up in ND and had a 855 that was real good. I would suggest running some Sea Foam through it. How many hours are on your tractor and is it any better if you plug the block heater in.

Sounds like you need to verify the operation of the glow plug system and the condition of the plugs themselves.

Oh, And welcome to TBN:D

Chances are that you have one or more bad glow plugs - it only takes one to make the whole system not work very well. Each plug should have a resistance of about 1 ohm. They tend to fail as opens, so the difference between a good and a bad one should be pretty obvious.

Also check for 12V at the glow plug connection when they're supposed to be on.

Welcome to TBN. I would also suggest you get a block heater installed. I plug my 755 in about an hour before I want to use it and it starts like it is 70 out.

Thanks for the warm welcome!! I just got the glow plugs checked out and replaced. I think my next step is a block header. The 655 has 3700 hours on it. Paid 4,800 with a KK finish mower on it. Did i get taken to the woodshed?

Skip the block heater - I have a 455 with essentially the same engine and it starts just fine down to below zero. If everything else is in good shape you should not be having any problems. Block heater is a "nice to have" but I would not spend any more money on that tractor until you know it is worthwhile.

First thing you should do, at this point, is a compression check. Remember that diesels are compression-ignition motors, so if you don't have enough compression, it's going to be hard to start. If the compression turns out to be bad, unfortunately you may indeed have been taken to the woodshed. 3700 hours is probably a bit above the average lifespan of that engine, although I have heard of some that go more. You might want to look into your state's consumer protection laws - many have an implied warranty, unless you specifically buy something "as is."

Also, you did not mention whether they found anything wrong with the glow plugs or circuit, and if what was fixed made any difference.

I have a 755, and it was not happy below 10ー. A block heater that replaced one of the freeze plugs fixed that. Plug that in, wait about 20 minutes, the fire right up, ready to push Buffalo NY snow. Cured that problem for good when I moved to SC.

My father has a 855. I think that has glow plugs and a heater in the airbox also. His starts no matter how cold it is. I think it is part of the direct injection system.

I have seen 755s go for $5000-6000 wih no attachments, but fewer hours, 500-800 hrs typically.

Enjoy it, nice little tractor. Mine has been trouble free (ecept I need a battery after 7 yrs!)

Sure - didn't mean that a block heater is a bad thing, but rather that he should make sure the engine is basically healthy before putting more money into it.

Thanks for the info guys. Now that it's above the artic temps up here it starts fine. Snow normally falls horizalty here along with temps that lock up alot of things. It's amazing that vehicles start in the morning. Thanks for your wisedom.
