JD 4710
OK I'm the rookie. Says so on the home page. I just signed up tonight.
I just closed on 56 acers, barn, out buildings, 30 acers tillable ( though I don't plan to till it. maybe I'll lease it). Anyway I need a tractor. I got a call on a JD 4710 trade in. 1100 hours on it. Local landscaper trades them every two years on a new one. Local dealer does all his maintenance. He's looking for $15K for the tractor with loader.

Bring on the advise for the rookie.... I need information and I appreciate your help.

Welcome to TBN! Good folk's here with plenty of "been there -- done that" wisdom. At first blush, the 4710 price sounds like not too bad of a deal. Not a red hot, steal but OK if the tractor checks out good. 1100 hours in 2 years is quite a bit runnin' time, however and there are always some questions you should get some answers for. Like service intervals and records. Did they change fluids, oil, filters, etc. when they should have and who did the work? What type of transmission does the tractor have? Hydro has a better resale price. How worn are the tires. How straight is the loader and bucket? Any cracks or re-welded areas? Bucket beat up? How are the seals -- any leaks or drips and hydraulic hoses, OK? 3rd SCV at the rear of tractor? Power beyond option? Mid-mount PTO? PTO shifts, engages, OK? Starts right up, black puff first off and clears with no smoke? No blow-bye from lower breather hose when running? Transmission does what it's supposed to when it's shifted, etc.? No funny noises from tranny, PTO or engine. Fluids all smell OK -- not burnt, black, etc.?
A couple of resources that I like using to check equipment values is www.MachineryLink.com and www.MachineFinder.com. And of course, eBay can provide you with some comparative background info as well. Hope this helps. Checkin' stuff out - makin' a deal; well, it's all good! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif AKfish

Hey thanks for the info AK. This one has the 12 speeds with clutchless suttle shift. It also has AG tires not R4's like I thought. I hear that swapping tires is not a just rubber exchange. you have to do rims too. This correct?

I'm going to look it over on Saturday. I'll take your list with me.

Joe1shoe,
You do have to change the rims to go to R-4's. Check your Private Messages (PM).
