On the subject on changing trans/hydraulic fluid, I'm about to do the same on my 2320. Do you all recommend cleaning the screen or do you ever replace the screen? After 150 hours, I would think it should be in pretty good shape yet.

Planning on cleaning the screen and getting the o-ring just in case.

My tractor doesn't have many hours, but I have no idea what the previous owner did (or did not do) over the last 4-5 years. Plan to change everything except the the front axle. (almost $250 for john deere filters and fluids, ouch!) Changing everything will give me a baseline going forward.

i don't own that modle, but have worked on tractors with a setup like that. I clean the screens and only replace if they look damaged.. the oring usually gets repalced, just because they are cheap.. etc.

Hey folks,

I'm changing out the transmission oil for the first time, are there any tricks or hints?

I've purchased all the fluids, filter, and gaskets (ouch, $150). I plan on soaking the screen in brake cleaner. Just wondering if there are any potential snags to be aware of, I'm not a top notch mechanic.

Thanks!
Sam

Info should all be in the operator's manual.

My screen was metal, in fine shape. Lord only knows how much a new one would cost, it will be along time before I find out.

Deere fluid and filters are costly, but alot cheaper than a new tractor so no substitutes for me.

ok.. get all 3 of yer 5g buckets ready and set under the tractor.. pull the drain plug.. drop the plug in the 2nd bucket while it is about 3/4 full.. plunge yer arm in frantically looking for the plug.. as the bucket gets to 99.999% full, jab yer thumb from your free arm up into the drain plug hole and (mostly) stop the oil flow... don't worry about the few ounces running down yer arm and into yer shirt.. oil is good for dry skin!
by now you've had time to find that plug.. but the delima.. that 5g bucket is now almost too heavy to move with one hand while the other is plugging the oil drain... so carefully scoot the bucket over to get the last one in place.. yuse yer legs to help. yeah.. you spill about a half gallon as the bucket scoots over.. now you let the rest drain into t he last pail.. you probably only get another pint or two down yer arm and shirt as you pull yer thumb outta the hole.

bingo! oil drained.

er.. at least that is how I did it the first time on my NH 7610s :)

best of luck!

sure wish I had read this first ... and my main drain pan was only 2.5 gals when I thought it was 5 .... DOH! Only lost about 1.0 gals mostly down my arms. I guess that grass will eventually grow back. Wife made me throw my clothes away ... DOH!

LOL ... best tool I know to do the job is a telephone. Call the dealer and say "fix it", (no fuss, no mess, no POed wifey).

Every time I went to the dealer I felt violated and then had to take it back immediately due to other problems ... If I go to a dealer it will be a different town. Unfortunately I may need to have 2 cylinders rebuilt in the FEL and may just take in the cylinders so that nothing else mysteriously needs to be repaired!

My JD green blood from childhood makes me see RED now when I think of the dealers!!!
