ps.. I might use diesel or mineral spirits onthe screen if there are any rubbers or plastic parts on it.. brake cleaner can be a bit agressive on rubber parts...

I saw a post from EddieWalker where he recommended using brake cleaner. I'll check when I pull the screen, but I believe (and hope) it's all metal. I plan on rinsing it well, and drying it completely with a hair dryer.

The biggest thing is making sure you have a large enough drain pain prepared, as already mentioned. It would take a huge amount of brake cleaner to be able to soak the entire screen, it's not necessary. I just spray it down, wiping as necessary and then I blow it off with a blow gun. You could soak it in diesel or gasoline, but that's a waste of fuel IMO. If you do this, clean it with brake cleaner afterward.

Before re-installing the screen, be sure to clean the gasket mating surfaces on the tractor and housing thoroughly. I use a wire wheel on a pneumatic angle grinder for these types of jobs myself, just a little pressure works like a charm. Don't fiddle with a razor or gasket scraper, it will take you forever and it will never turn out as good.

I'd recommend wearing rubber gloves as well. It's not quite as nasty as standard gear oil you might use in your truck, but it's pretty nasty. Also if you drop the plug like the one guy did, for goodness sake use a magnet or makeshift screen to extract it. A telescoping magnet, or magnet on a string work well for this type of thing.

Lastly, follow the manual. If you need a copy PM me.

Good Luck

soaking the entire thing in it would take alot.. spraying it off is no big deal.

again.. I don't know what your screen looks like.. so check for seals or orings that might be damaged by brake cleaner if you 'dunk' it.

I keep an old 'paint' can of diesel / mineral spirits mixed.. it used to be a carb dip can so has a basket and all.. makes a good cleaner bucket.. and the sediment falls to the bottom..

a few drips of diesel or brake cleaner left on it won't hurt didly when you compair to hom much oil it's going to see.. :)

When I did mine, I went ahead and purchased new o-rings before I started. Glad I did because one of the o-rings on one of the plugs came off in 2 pieces. Wet the ring on filter before putting on to make a good seal.

My hydraulic filter is a much bigger then my oil filter, glad I borrowed a tool to take it off. I was surprised at how thin the metal is on it.

Thanks for the screen cleaning advice JordanFTW, I concur. And, using rubber gloves sounds good too.

JD5210, I bought an extra o-ring so I'm there.

Hey folks,

Did the deed this weekend. We had lousy weather, so had to do it in my barn.

Things that made it easy: got a 10 gallon bucket metal at Lowe's, 4" filter remover from Advance Auto, and just used some carb cleaner I had to rinse off the trans screen. Not much of an expense compared to the $365 my dealer wanted.

Backed the tractor up on a ramp, drained fluid through the screen outlet and had lots of working room underneath. Laid down an old piece of plywood to crawl around on.

I was please at the amount of all the metal that was not caught in the screen, maybe a heaping teaspoon full. I've seen photos on TBN that had lots more metal on 'em. The old gasket came off clean as a bean.

Thanks again for all the advice and support.

~Sam

Glad to see it went off without a hitch!

Also, you can view a better copy of your owners manual here if you need it.

Thanks, JordanFTW. Funny thing, when comparing the online manual service intervals with my printed manual, some of the service hours are way lower. For instance, JD now calls for Hydro models to change the trans oil and filter at 50 hrs, my manual says 500 (just check the fluid level at 50). Quite a difference!

I had so little metal trapped in the screen, not sure it would have made a difference or not...

More then likely, that was brake material. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. It would be a good idea to make sure they are retracting properly. It's been discussed on the forum before, if you search around.
