Hey folks,

I'm changing out the transmission oil for the first time, are there any tricks or hints?

I've purchased all the fluids, filter, and gaskets (ouch, $150). I plan on soaking the screen in brake cleaner. Just wondering if there are any potential snags to be aware of, I'm not a top notch mechanic.

Thanks!
Sam

Make double sure your catch pan is big enough.

+1. Mine was about 7 gallons on the 4310. It's easy.

Manual says 6.5 gallons, got a 10 gallon bucket. Draining the front as well for 1 more gallon. Thank goodness our county recycle centers will take the used oil.

Just make sure when installing the screen you get a good seal on the suction tube clamps and neck. If not It could suck air and you will have jerky steering and Hyd.

ok.. get all 3 of yer 5g buckets ready and set under the tractor.. pull the drain plug.. drop the plug in the 2nd bucket while it is about 3/4 full.. plunge yer arm in frantically looking for the plug.. as the bucket gets to 99.999% full, jab yer thumb from your free arm up into the drain plug hole and (mostly) stop the oil flow... don't worry about the few ounces running down yer arm and into yer shirt.. oil is good for dry skin!
by now you've had time to find that plug.. but the delima.. that 5g bucket is now almost too heavy to move with one hand while the other is plugging the oil drain... so carefully scoot the bucket over to get the last one in place.. yuse yer legs to help. yeah.. you spill about a half gallon as the bucket scoots over.. now you let the rest drain into t he last pail.. you probably only get another pint or two down yer arm and shirt as you pull yer thumb outta the hole.

bingo! oil drained.

er.. at least that is how I did it the first time on my NH 7610s :)

best of luck!

ps.. I might use diesel or mineral spirits onthe screen if there are any rubbers or plastic parts on it.. brake cleaner can be a bit agressive on rubber parts...

my fuel tap plugged out in the field once.. 8miles from civilazation and no cell reception.. that was a fun one.. taking apart the fuel hard line and tap with a pair of gas pliers, and then blowing out the fuel screen and tap (mmm... diesel tastes good! )while plugging the 20g tank with yer finger, the tank that is near empty, so that you can actually drive home instead of walk and leave yer 95hp tractor and batwing out on some lonesome property.

at least the diesel pouring down my arm was keeping MOST of the ants off of me, since the tractor broke down over a huge nest of red ants...

yep.. it's all fun!

Thanks Soundguy! That's the answer I was looking for!

Thanks also for the other post warning about ants. Our winter here in NC
has been so mild, those dang fire ants have been active.
