It is typically cheaper to purchase a new engine or a rebuilt from a rebuild shop.

Does it need a full overhaul or just a bottom side?

unless you need a block you should be able to get a inframe overhaul at the dealer for around $3k. i have had a 4440 jd overhauled at the jd dealer for less than 3 grand including machine work on the head. this was using oem parts & a 1 year unlimited hour warranty.this was done 4 or 5 years ago, so i know parts have gone up, but unless your block is damaged this would be your best way to go.

JD engines are a wet sleeve design ? then you could easily pop them liners, pistons, rings yourself, and buy valve seating polish and a suction cup on a stick to do the heads.\
If the head gasket wasnt blown, sandpaper the surfaces clean, no need to skim.

Also, depending on the hours, you might want to inspect the crank bearings.

In some cases, just not THIS case...... A "new" 404 Deere crate engine (Or better choice would be a 466, al la 4240) would cost considerably more than an in frame overhaul by the time you add in labor for a swap.
