In March of 2005 I purchased a 110 complete with all options including the Laurin cab and matching box blade from my Deere dealer. I have had very little time to use this machine and this March I will make my final payment. The machine as of yesterday had 251 hours on it and has developed a major problem with the transmission or transfer case ( don't know the particlulars yet). With all the grinding and noise had a tough time getting it on my trailer but took it in to the dealer for assessment and repair.

Questions, has any one here had a major failure with a new Deere that is out of the waranty period but has such low hours? What are the chances that Deere will step up to the plate? Has anyone else had major transfer case issues and failures with one of the 110 or 4000 series tractors?

To recap, the tractor is now 3 years old and has 251 hours of use, the warranty is 12 months and 1200 hours typically.

Welcome to the TBN forums. Sorry, it couldn't have been under better circumstances...

I can assure you --- I (and no doubt many others) will be waiting with baited breath to learn 1.) the exact nature of your 110's problem and 2.) how your dealer and Deere and company addresses that particular issue.

That's way too few hours; IMO, for the kind of symptoms you describe.

But, given that you were able to drive it up on the trailer; I'd gamble that you've got a transfer case problem (i.e. works in 2-wheel drive but won't engage 4x4 or only with grinding protest) and not a transmission blowout.

Keep us posted , I am hoping to pick up my 110 TLB tomorrow or Monday , it finally came in and has been at the dealer for a week. I was away on business and have not been able to pick it up. :( I have heard about trans hydro issues on the early models not the 2005. I hope they make it right for you . I have a p-REVERSER 4310 that I am trading and love that style gear trans and would have prefered that over the hydro if it was a option .

There are programs in place at Deere to handle things like this, you have to start the process with the dealer and zone rep but usually they offer to split the cost of the reair between the dealer, the customer and Deere. Not really a good thing for the dealer because he ends up eating all of the lost profit on the repair and some out of pocket costs.

For purchasers of these machines be sure to get the bottom skid plate to protect the lines. The unfortunate thing is you should also clean the skid plate off from time to time.

art --- do you have any info regarding the belly pan? Pics, dimensions, etc. I looked into buying it with the 110 but the shipping cost as much as the pan...

I think I can make my own from 1/4" plate. I just need some ideas about attachment locations and such-

Received a phone call from the dealer's shop foreman Friday morning and he said the pinion gear was stripped badly along with bearing failure as you might expect. He said that he spoke with the Deere rep about the issue of such low hours (251) and age of the unit. The rep was thinking about a 50-50 split for the repairs which will total about $1300.00 for labor and parts. I said that this seemed fair enough to me. Should get the final answer about this on Monday. The shop foreman said he went ahead an ordered the parts and that I should be able to pick up the unit by the middle of next week.

So for about $650 and travel cost for two trips, cost of rental unit on Thursday I am getting out of this for about $1000 total. I am relieved since it could have been much worse.


About the bellypan, I ordered mine with the tractor and also bought the stabilizer cylinder guards. Did not have to pay extra freight for anything except the Laurin cab. For anyone ordering one of these 110's I reccomend that you get all the optional hydraulics when you order the unit. I opted for everything but a radio and it makes for a very flexible unit.

Did the technician say what causes the failure? I was curious cause I pick up my new 110 TLB Monday and am trading my loved power reverser 4310.

Do yo think the belly pan plate keeps heat in the Hydro unit or is the venelation adequete ? I have been debating to add the extended warranty , I repair most of my own equipment, but would lack factory tools for hydro units if needed plus the learning curve would be machine down time.

I am glad they did help you out on the repair , also do you have a pic of the cab, and is it work ok with the hoe portion?

I will talk to the mechanic on Monday to better determine the cause of the failure and will post afterwards. I have had alot of Deere products and I think this is a rare incident. The damage was done to the MFWD and I would think this would be the same with any of the transmissions in use today.

Power reverser with foot throttle vs. ehydro with hand throttle;
both work very well but bear in mind the 110 is close to 7500 lbs or so and needs more throttle to be responsive with 43 hp. Moving the tractor from the rear seat position is very easy the way it is set up and isn't practical to setup with the direction reverser and regular transmission.

No problems with heat build up because of the belly pan. Let me say right now that this units needs the belly pan for protection, picked up this info right here on the forum in 2004, believe me there is a lot to damage without it on this unit.

I did not buy the extended warranty for my unit, I did try to buy some extra time since I knew that the tractor wouldn't be used much in the first two years. I asked about extending the standard 1200 hr/ 12 month coverage to more like 1200 hr/36 months to no avail. If I had to choose between the extended coverage and the bellypan expense I would go with the bellypan everytime.

About the Laurin cab works great with the backhoe functions this is a great add on for the 110. For pics go to the Laurin site see

WHEW.... sounds like you're comin' out alot better on this situation than what it appeared like a few days ago!

Glad to hear that the damages wasn't a major catastrophe and that Deere is steppin' up to make things right. Pretty good news, IMO.

I agree with your advice on the hydraulics -- I got every one they put on 'em!

I'm with Macdabs, too; if you got any pics of your setup that you could share with the rest of us --- well, that would be a mighty fine thing!

I'd like to see how/where the belly pan attaches on the tractor, etc.

Curious about the cab as well. Can you still detach the hoe from the tractor with the cab on?

Oh yah, was it the main pinion that went out or was it one of the "satellite" pinions on the wheels?

I've always been "nervous" about the wheel pinions; especially under-loads and turning sharp. I've always been kinda amazed that the turn-stops on the wheels aren't less severe (longer turning radius) to ensure that the pinions don't end up "clipped off"!

Anyways, glad to hear about your 110's situation and the short turnaround with your dealer. A dozen donuts all-round for the shop crew!!!
