Is there such thing as a premium 42" mower?

We have a Ferris as do our neighbors. Ferris does not make a 42" but they do make a 36" and 48". We bought Ferris because of the suspension system on them and their excellent service life. You can tow stuff with them. Wife recommended.

That actually looks really interesting. Unfortunately Mrs. Quicksand uses the mower a lot, to tow around a garden cart, and she insists on something with a steering wheel.

I see. That will cut down your choices a bit but you should get what she wants.

John Deere dealers can probably put a 42" deck on just about anything you would like.

Has Mrs. Quicksand ever tried a Zero Turn?

My guess is not. I used to pull a small trailer with a ZTR all the time. It works fine.

I'm afraid gone are the days of the good ol gear drive transaxle.

That’s a real tragedy, not. The only tragedy is when I have to use a gear drive mower which isn’t often.

Well, if the hydros in the new lawn tractors weren't a 200 hour time bomb that can't climb a hill or tow a lawn trailer it would be different.

Looks like I was wrong about the gear drive being history. This is probably as close as it gets for a 42" deck model. I'm sure it's a lightweight but you can't have it all.

The Troy-Bilt is a little heavier if that means anything.

I see what you mean, but not HD candidates at all. #1 would be a light duty gear like you said- if it is available. I think that they were replaced with that plastic General Transmission CVT in later models. #2 is MTD's CVT w/ the 2 traction belts. Hi old White could be a the same type (though likely more robust) or gear.

I can’t help it that they’re the lowest end trash money can buy. Good hydros holdup just fine. Try building the gear transmission with plastic gears and a cardboard clutch disk and see how the outcome is.

It seems like almost everyone is using Tuff Torq. I read somewhere -- can't find the site right now -- that the K46 had more than half of the market.
