IF you own a freezer......

These Acurites sure are very sloooow to respond. I know they need to be in case you just loaded it up with room temperature meat, but it sure makes my testing (to make sure they go into alarm) take all night.

You'll get it figured out. Freezers are one less thing to worry about then.

Never tried TOFU and never will. If it jiggles and isn't Jello, I'm not eating it.

I'll see that and raise you one.
I won't eat Jello.

Come to think about it, I can't remember the last time I had Jello.

You can't remember?
When was the last time you prepped for a colonoscopy?

I've fiddled around with repairing freezers when the simple things crap out and can be replaced but I've never tried recharging one.I may read up on how to do recharges. I have a couple of old chest freezers that are just not cooling but the compressors run fine.

It's been many years ago but I've used the clamp-on type charging ports for R-12 systems. They were similar to the copper water line taps for ice makers etc. I'm not sure but they may make them for R134a too for later stuff. Just be sure to pull a decent vacuum and then watch your gauges for any leaks before charging. With R134a be sure to know your charge weight for the system and keep the recharge very close to it - R134a is not as forgiving as old R12 with under or over charging.

You must have the last of the functional ones, I seem to have received two duds. I have re-set, cycled the battery power every which way and no luck getting the remotes to stay in communication with the display, even with the remotes sitting on top of the freezer (see pic). I am guessing WiFi interference. Both sets are behaving similarly so they are going to be returned. The 000986 model is no longer on the Acurite website, the attached link is the model they now show. Same price on Amazon but much better reviews

My Acu-rite freezer alarms have worked perfectly for 15 months. I hope you have better luck with the new versions. I can't remember if the batteries need to be installed in a certain sequence or not.

No need to check for leaks because you know you have one or it wouldn't be low on refrigerant. Refrigerator/ freezer leaks are much harder to find and repair than a/c leaks because they are in either steel or aluminum tubing and may be inaccessible.

Thanks! I am going to try this. I will put the meter on it for a week empty and measure the KWh's then freeze the water jugs and rerun the test for the same period of time. Shop temps will not very this time of year much as it holds about 55 degrees. I enjoy these sorts of things.

I will be interested in how your experiment comes out. I have also wondered about filling one with blocks of styrofoam. Give us a report.
