Ice - Sand avalable ?

Got a call from my neighbour today - her husband took a spill in the driveway, and needed help getting up. She's only about 100 #, so couldn't help him on her own.

He's fine, fortunately, only damage was his pride.

I'm fixing this once I go out today..... it's easy to forget that somebody isn't capable of moving basic things around anymore..... they had no bags of sand or salt around at all.

A 50# bag of sand costs next to nothing, and goes a long way on an icy day....

Kitty litter or floor dry works good too. As does wood/coal ashes. Sawdust will work, too.

Sand is good for the lawn as well. I prefer it and use it when I can rather than salt.

Glad you were there to help. I have a neighbor I worry about. I try to keep an eye out for him.

A friend of a coworker fell on ice last winter and was seriously hurt. The guy was in the hospital for months and I do mean months. The accident will likely kill him eventually and all from a fall on ice. Tis easy to do that is for sure but you don't really think of a fall killing you... I think his wife was hurt going to help him. If not this incident that happened somewhere else.

I can't remember if it was last winter, or the one before, but a widow just to the west of us slipped one ice one evening outside of her house. She could not move and some how survived the cold temperatures overnight before being found the next morning.

This winter we have had very few nights below 32 and highs in the 70 so ice has not been a problem.

I spend way too much time fighting rust on my vehicles...... I definitely am a Sandman ! Salt takes out lots of things; multi-level commercial parking garages have to get rebuilt after enough concrete fails.

You find that Slips and Falls are a big factor at work, when you go through Health and Safety training. In most cases, those happen under pretty benign conditions.

I keep our walkways pretty well sanded, but as I spend time outdoors in the Winter here, I manage to get in a few slips of my own off the property - and that's with reflexes quite a bit faster than my neighbour.

Winter is a dangerous time here, lots of broken bones and hips, people stuck outdoors unprepared often don't survive..... little things to improve the odds can be a big help....

A pair of ice grippers for his boots will go a long way.I have a dedicated pair set-up for when its icy.
