Fellow Posters,

I wanted to inquire about the group's opinion regarding my property and equipment needs. As many of you know I like to trade tractors. I have kept John Deere financially solvent for the past three years. Currently I own a 3720, which I really like. It has great power (this one runs stronger than my last one) and I feel quite comfortable on it. Although I could probably do on a smaller tractor, I occasionally need this sized machine and for those rare times it is nice to have it. It is a keeper. I also owned a Gator which I liked as well. I sold it last month to a nice couple who use it to show real estate in remote areas. Where I live winter is the time to get most projects done, as the ground cover is down and for the most part the ground is harder. When I first started looking at a utility tractor, I was looking to replace my 595 which was a great machine. The problem was that it lacked the hydraulic capacity I needed. I spoke with my dealer who is a good friend and had told him I was interested in a 4115 (at the time). He suggested a mid frame and I concurred. Since that time, I have never owned anything smaller than a mid frame JD> My current issue is that about 80% of my work for the winter is on the back 30% of my property. I have one access to this area, and it is behind my garage. I have about 52" of clearance back there without blasting imbedded rock or uprooting two large hardwood trees, which I hate to do (both are >100 years old). No way I turn or prod my 3720 will coax it into this space and even if there I think it is too heavy to safely go in these areas I need. I have thought about what would be the best piece of equipment for the job: another tractor, but smaller or another UTV?? I have studied other brands but really would like to stick to green. My tasks: hauling or carrying fencing to steep areas that might be soft, hauling mulch and rip-rap rock to make retaining walls and perhaps some light grading work and tilling (although I might just get a self propelled hand tiller for this work). In short, mostly transport things that either a tractor or UTV could do. I am on a little bit of a budget (no SET number, though), and I have some space considerations. I have looked for a good used subcompact, but there simply are not any I have found in our area. I also am not against another UTV for the hauling part as I also do some longer trips to the top of our mountain (about two miles) for rock, etc, but my Gator would not fit either, as it was 1" wider than the 3720. My old 595 would fit, but again, did not have the hydraulic needs for me. I am a bit worried about duplicating equipment if I go with another tractor, but I am open to all suggestions here. I would like to do business with my dealer as he has been quite good to me. I want to have some good objective opinions before I talk with him, so that I do not overbuy, which I can do on occasion.

I have both a 3720 Cab model tractor and a Kawasaki Mule. It's a great combo. The Mule is the best, most universally useful piece of equipment I have ever owned. It's powerful enough to pull a heavy trailer behind it when I need to carry bulky items that won't fit in the cargo bed or haul a big load of firewood back to the homestead.

I got a used one in camo for a good price. I like the camo rather than the solid colors 'cause camo finish doesn't scratch up, requires zero maintainence, and looks great in the woods.

I don't know how it compares in size and nimbleness to the gator. Try one at a dealer and see what you think.

I just checked the web site specs and the Kawasaki Mule is 57" wide so it won't work.

Michael,

I really appreciate your checking on these things for me. Thanks again. I am still looking for a viable option, aside from blasting caps.

John you have a million trees in your yard - make the room. You know what to do. Wish I was closer to your dealer so I could get some deals on the ones you trade in!!

Just post down in the 'Meetin's an' Git-t'gether' forums that you are having a gathering. Mention you will be roasting a goat. That'll get all those Texicans riled up, and they will come tearing up your way. They drive HUGE trucks and will make their own trail between those rocks.

Make sure that you get a tasty goat.
