Looking at adding a tilt cylinder to another 3PH and wondering if anyone uses a single acting rather than double acting. I'm sure there would be pros and cons but the 3PH itself is actually single acting with its power up and "float".

Do you mean a hydraulic top link or a tilt cylinder to replace the lift arm?

In either case I don't see how a single acting cylinder could work since you need to be able to extend and retract the load while holding it in the selected position.

Side tilt cylinder to replace the vertical link. The 3PH itself is single acting and I'm asking about the pros and cons of using a single acting cylinder. I'm thinking that it would actually mimic a double acting because it wouldn't be able to "float" unless the valve spool was a detented float type in one direction. (A tiny bit of float when the cylinder tries to draw a vacuum)

The exception would be if there was air in the line going to to the rod end of the cylinder that would allow some float by letting the cylinder compress a bit creating a vacuum.

So if you use a single acting side tilt cylinder, which way would you put it, power up or power down?

Nope, don't think you'd like a single action cylinder.

I would go with a double acting cylinder and a valve with a float detent, that would cover about any scenario.
A problem with single action cylinders and the lower end valves is that they don't have a float which means pushing the pump flow through the relief while trying to float to extend the cylinder in the non powered direction and there are very few single acting valves.

The single powered port would have to be on the rod end so it would retract the cylinder to "power up" and carry the load, right?

Single acting cylinders are commonly operated with conventional double acting valves using just the A or B port with the extra one blocked.
Pushing thru the relief valve is not an issue especially in the app where the cylinder is adjusted infrequently and a very short stroke.
A double acting cylinder and a valve with float detent would work as long as you didn't forget to move the valve back to center position when raising the 3PH.

I'm just looking for a reason why a single acting cylinder with a double acting valve (single hose) wouldn't work.
It would give a larger selection of cylinders to choose from.
