I didn't follow this. How it got to talk about fiber. Perimeter protection at an airport? But the mechanics can take the planes, any time they want, apparently. lol. If terrorists really existed and wanted to harm the air traveling public, they could just stand on the shoulder of the highway at the end of a runway with a hand held rocket launcher! They don't need to mess around with the fence!

My lady friend just bought a house in a small town (not even a food store) served by fiber. Quite impressive. But everything, obviously has to be home run, no splices. That complicates things.

Fiber optic cable can be spliced easily.

But not spliced into.

Really? The tech gave me quite a good rundown on their fiber operation. You could terminate the fiber in a transceiver and connect more transceivers and more fiber, which at that point requires power, but not to my understanding make a "Y" fiber connection.

Correct. They run main fiber down the roadsides like copper. At prescribed intervals, there are points where they take out fiber runs to homes, just like copper. Each Fiber To The Home (FTTH) run terminates at a box on the side of the house, just like copper. The main difference is that each of those points requires power to operate the device that makes the transfer work.

Our system is a mixture. Fiber runs along the main highways only, then changes over to copper down the side roads and to the homes. Power is required to the terminals where the fiber to copper change is made, but not down the roads or at the homes.

The critical failure point with fiber is that when it goes dark for any reason, you lose everything. No data, no voice. With our previous copper fed DSL, if the internet portion failed, we still had dial tone to make or receive calls. With the current system, we can lose everything, including the ability to dial 911.

The hospital still has it's old phone system and never has gone done... plus still on DSL with the Central Office being a stone's throw away.

Several of the Hospital Building Tenants are Fiber and reliability or up-time has been a problem... and when it is down... they have no voice, fax internet...

You can't make a Y copper connection in a network either. Everything is a T with the T being a tap, repeater, hub, switch, etc....

My last employer had lots of voice over IP, but maintained several copper lines. Our main phone number, the fire alarms system, and the elevator emergency numbers come to mind.
