Here in Mass, we pay 6.25% sales tax on the purchase of a new car or truck. The town also doubles down and is nice enough to send a excise tax bill shortly after the registration is complete. The first year it is about the same as sales tax and drops along with the value of the particular vehicle. Is this typical in other states?

About the same here except the town gets the excise tax upfront when the vehicle is registered, then the declining excise tax every year when the registration is renewed. Our sales tax is 5.5%.

As many ways as they can which is estimated as about 55% of earned income.
Provincial, federal, city, schools, sales tax, GST, registrations, driver lisc, hospital tax, permits for just about everything (wells, septic, building, demolition, tree cutting, parking etc etc.
To remember that EVERY goods or service gets taxed.
Even garage sales and flea markets are actually subject to taxes.
Buying a house gets you a welcome tax.
Up until August you work to pay taxes and what is left is yours.

SC has a sales tax of 5% on vehicles, with a $300 cap. Counties assess annual property taxes. My newest vehicle is a 2007 Honda Pilot -- the initial county tax bill was $300+ and is now down to about $120/year.

6.25 state, 2% municipal, but I rarely pay either since we have both ag and business certificates. On a new truck or tractor I could use the ag card to get a big break. We get hammered on property taxes the majority of which funds the schools. My pet peeve is that mobile homes are not taxed via property taxes and the majority of mobile home dwellers are the ones sending millions of kids to the schools overburdening their resources. About 30% of our last school district budget was buying equipment and hiring extra personnel to handle federally mandated ESL and special needs students.

In Pocahontas Arkansas the sales tax is above 10%. I don't buy very much there. Good 4 lane road to Jonesboro so we shop there or go to Thayer & West Plains Mo. The school tax on real property keeps rising also. We get a $300 homestead exemption on our home. It seems the government parasite takers just keep wanting more & more. They don't consider it might be prudent to become fiscally responsible. tax & spend is their motto.

Look's like all states along with the fed's have a spending problem, not a taxing problem! I almost feel lucky with only a 5.5% sales tax after reading some of the others here, but NH has none and is mighty convienient.
