The front axel of an old hay wagon I want to rebuild has a frozen front axel piviot. The tow bar yoke if free to swing but at the ends the wheels will not turn. They are frozen. I tried to beat them loose after taking off the top plate but I can't budge it. I could really use an exploded view of the assembly. Is there something else holding it in the sleeve?

Sound like during its lifetime the spindles were never greased and they simply rusted in place. I have seen this on a number of older running gear. In fact I have one myself at the present time which has been very stiff since I acquired it. :(

Been there, done that! Long hard ugly job; you need a really big torch.. Fixed it for my neighbor, bought him a grease gun when I returned his wagon.

I guess with the savings in grease (not using any) for thirty years pays for a new wagon running gear???:confused2:

Start the process with penetrating oil (Like PB Blaster or something). Give the frozen part a good long shot of the penetrating oil once a day for a week. Then get the torch out and a BIG hammer.

Last summer I bought one like that at an auction sale. Luckily it was left sitting straight when it seized up so I could pull it home. I heated and beat and then some more but the only way I got them loose was to torch off the bottom tab and top of centre bolt and then take it to a machine shop with a press ten times bigger than mine. Starting at the centre it is built with a bolt through to squeeze the top and bottom tabs onto a bushing that sits inside the outside turning spindle part. There was no way I could get the heat to the centre bushing to release the bolt. New bolts and welding back on the bottom got it fixed up.
