Interesting. My experience with a single lid grapple on logs is just the opposite: Unless the log is very uniform, one edge of the lid will clamp down on fat or lumpy end of the log, while the other end is still off the log, allowing it to swing out of the open end while maneuvering the tractor.

I have the same issue. The problem also shows up when you try to grab an oblong rock. IMO, the dual lid is a bit more flexible and from my experience, (I've used both) can do everything a single lid can.

I researched grapples for several months before buying. I wound up with a 72" dual lid Blue Diamond (same width as the bucket) . The dealer had one in stock and gave me a good price. The Blue Diamond had the specs I was looking for and I couldn't find any bad product reviews. Availability turned out to be the deciding factor.

I bought this 44" wide Gorilla Grapple seven years ago to pick up sheared cedar trees, where we used to live. I had been using forks, but you had to get lined up with the side of the tree to get the forks under it. Then about halfway to the burn pile the wind would blow it off and I would have to maneuver to get lined up again to pick it up.

This grapple doesn't have any cross bars, so it will penetrate the tree no matter what angle it is laying:

Also the upper tines bypass the lower tines, making it easy to pick up chunks of concrete:

I got my Woods grapple because I happened to see them at a Cabelas and was taken by how well they were built. After a bit of discount stacking, I got a great price on it and was able to inspect my unit before I signed for it.

3 years later = no regerts! :p

My needs are different than yours, as I have a much smaller tractor. I won't be picking up a ton of anything with it. Every pound of grapple reduces my payload by a pound, so weight matters. Strength is less critical, as if it weighs more than 1200lbs, I won't be picking it up!

I can, however, recommend EverythingAttachments.com. Travis is very helpful, and the quality of my 55" Wicked grapple is outstanding - and I'm picky. EA underpromised and overdelivered. Not the cheapest, but buy once - cry once.

Mine's 600# or so. Same weight as my 7' bucket.
