Gooseneck or stick with bumper pull ?

I agree that it isnt about the trailer type. Or about any one thing in particular. But it is about the WHOLE package. Truck, Trailer, Hitch, Load, AND MOST IMPORTANT...Driver.

If any one of those things dont match the rest, it is a recipe for disaster. Weather it is GN, bumper, 5th, or 18-wheeler.

I honestly think that BP trailers get a bad rap is because of poor decisions and poor drivers. It is VERY common for a vehicle to come from the factory with a hitch. And average joe schmoe can put an insert it and pull a trailer. But that dont mean he knows what he is doing.

When it comes to GN's, a much higher percentage of people know what they are doing IMO. Because they are far less common, and usually more expensive. And GN trailers and hitches are usually rated higher than the average reese hitch and BP trailer. Therefore more difficult for the average joe to overload.

So dont fault the trailer type. Fault the person behind the wheel making stupid decisions. And pulling a 14k BP trailer with a 6500lb tractor on it is far from what I would call a stupid decision.:2cents:

They both got there place. I purchased a used 14 k 20+5 this week for hauling pine shaving for the girls FFA chapter, 4-H, and our personal use which will be for haying, and other needs for our small cow/calf and pig operation. There are times you need both. I also can haul my tractor and crew ranger at the same time. Couldn't find a bumper pull long enough. I hate double tripping! LUTT

A lot of the weight on the gn goes to your truck's rear axle. Make sure that it can handle it.

That said, pulling a gn is a pleasure compared to a bp trailer. I have a 14K gn and fully loaded, I hardly even know it is back there.

IMO, as with most decisions, the OP has to define what his requirements are. There is no, universal, best solution.

Have plenty of truck . And know its dangerous deal on a bumper pull most likely on a receiver hitch . On one little pin . A bumper pull is no where as stable as a gooseneck load . Really dangerous with that kind of weight .

Hope you stay away from me on the road .

Think I have plenty of truck and trailer if need be .

Guess it all comes down to comfort level. We pull 25,000# of the bumpers.

As for a 5/8" hitch pin. The sheer point is north of 50,000#.

If I am hauling anything heavy I will use a gooseneck that I have access to. Anything under 12000lbs gets hauled with my standard trailers. My gooseneck got sold 2 years ago from lack of use. I hate to say bumper pull because "some" will friek out about that. There are hitches rated in excess of 18,000lbs for pickups so obviously it can be done. Like a previous poster said the FIRST thing to safe towing is the driver. If the driver is not comfortable with towing at the max rating of the equipment then I agree 100% I don't want that driver anywhere near me on the highway. So please if you don't know how to correctly haul something and don't want to learn leave it to the experienced ones who do. CJ

Interesting discussion

I agree - someone slammed me here because I used the term "bumper pull" referring to my Ford installed factory hitch rated for 12,000 lbs. w/WD.

But one thing going for the non-gooseneck is I've never seen a tailgate damaged when someone started to drive off without raising the gooseneck high enough. I've seen trailer tongues drop on the ground but tailgates don't get damaged :)

Which why I have an F250 badge on my duallie.

Chris

I have one of them pins that is bent from pulling under 8000#'s .
And I even have a receiver hitch that I broke with a little light swing of a short handled 8# hammer . The shock load of a 14,000# load would easily do the same .

But it's where the load is placed on the truck that makes it dangerous with 14,000# plus loads .
It's saver to have the load over the axle than 4-5 feet behind it .

I agree.

If things go really bad, which would the puller have better control of.

I am with Chris on this one, but remember we both have 3500 trucks. Get the bumper pull and save you bed space for other things.
